How was carbon created in the universe?
The light elements hydrogen and helium were formed at the beginning, in the Big
Bang. Lithium, beryllium, and boron, the next three elements, were formed shortly
thereafter when the universe had cooled somewhat. All of the heavier elements
were formed millions of years later in the interiors of stars through reactions in
which the nuclei of lighter elements fuse to form heavier elements.
What Is Organic Chemistry?
Organic chemistry is the chemistry of compounds that contain the element carbon.
Organic chemicals affect virtually every facet of our lives, and for this reason, it
is important and useful to know something about them.

● All organic compounds contain carbon atoms and most contain hydrogen atoms.
● All the carbon atoms have four bonds. A stable carbon atom is said to be
tetravalent.
● Other elements may also be present. Any atom that is not carbon or hydrogen is
called a heteroatom. Common heteroatoms include N, O, S, P, and the halogens.
● Some compounds have chains of atoms and some compounds have rings.
Vital Force Theory
The science of organic chemistry began to flower with the demise of a nineteenth
century theory called vitalism. According to vitalism, organic compounds were only
those that came from living organisms, and only living things could synthesize
organic compounds through intervention of a vital force.

Drawing structures in 3D
Rotation about single bonds is allowed, but double bonds are rigid and
cannot be twisted.

How to draw Bond Line Formulas
● No Cs are written for carbon atoms, except optionally for CH 3 groups at the end
f a chain or branch.
● No Hs are shown for hydrogen atoms, unless they are needed to give a three-
dimensional perspective, in which case we use dashed or solid wedges
(as explained in the next section).
How to draw Bond Line Formulas
● When an atom other than carbon or hydrogen is present, the symbol for that
element is written at the appropriate location (i.e., in place of a bend or at the
terminus of the line leading to the atom).
● Hydrogen atoms bonded to atoms other than carbon (e.g., oxygen or nitrogen)
are written explicitly.
Bond-Line Formula
Bond-Line Formula
Example Write each of the following condensed structural formulas as a bond-line formula:
Example
Example For each pair of structures, determine whether they represent different
compounds or a single compound.
Example Add any unshared electrons to give each element an octet in its valence shell in
the formulas below and indicate any formal charges. Note that all of the
hydrogen atoms that are attached to heteroatoms have been drawn if they are
present.
Example Consider each pair of structural formulas that follow and state whether the two
formulas represent the same compound, whether they represent different
compounds that are constitutional isomers of each other, or whether they
represent different compounds that are not isomeric.
