Introduction

The National Service Training Program (NSTP) otherwise known as Republic Act
9163 or the NSTP Act of 2001 is a Law and Students of any baccalaureate degree course
or at least two-year technical vocational courses in public and private educational
institutions shall be required to complete one of the NSTP components as requisite for
graduation.
NSTP has 3 components, the Literacy Training Service (LTS) which is focused on
Literacy to prepare the students to become a teacher of literacy and numeracy skills.
Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) this program prepares the graduate to serve
the Philippine Military if needed. Civic Welfare Training Service or (CWTS) is designed to
the general welfare and the betterment of life for the members of the community, which
may be tapped by the state for the delivery of literacy, civic welfare and disaster risk
reduction programs and activities.
In our end as the students of NSTP 2 we had our community immersion as our
version of reaching out to the community. We started it with the gathering of data by
visiting the community and we conducted an interview to figure out what can we do help
strengthen the community of Purok 12 St. John. With that being said after we gathered
all the details needed we were able to identify some of the area the we need to focus on
or let’s say the common problem of the respondent in the said community. We formulated
a project that would somehow suffice the respondents needs. There was a project
implementation, and project monitoring and we saw how they respond to the project that
they implement themselves and they work together as whole and this is only because
they have one common GOAL WHICH IS THE BETTERMENT OF THE COMMUNITY
OF ST. JOHN.
Community service is designed to help the communities who have issues with their
growth, as well as the health of the community through NSTP2 we can be a form of help
by providing them basic solution and knowledge as to what to do with the issue within
their community and we all know each community needs to find its own solutions to its
own problems. There are no easy or "universal" answers that can be brought in from the
outside. Human factors are what make community activities fail or succeed. Thus, it
infuses to the youth with good citizenship of being; MAKADIYOS, MAKATAO,
MAKABAYAN at MAKAKALIKASAN.
Initiation
Last October 13 2018, Ms. Anita Jabla gave us instructions on how we should
properly deal with the community before our first visitation. This is to ensure and we
already know what to do when we get to the area to avoid waste of time. And on October
20 2018, the NSTP class section EB-1 went to Purok 12 Barangay 76-A Bucana, Davao
City to conduct interviews to our chosen respondents. The aim of our interview was to
know about the people who live in the area, their way of living, their problems in the
community and also for us to know how we can help or what we can contribute to their
community. When we arrived there, a Barangay Health Worker named Ma’am Edith was
the one who helped us in looking for respondents. She is very helpful especially in doing
house-to-house just for the residents to let us enter their house and have them
interviewed. When we were still looking for respondents to interview, it was not easy some
of the residents did not want to cooperate.
After more or less than an hour of looking for respondents, we finally made it and
all of us were able to interview some of the residents. As we were doing the interview with
our respondents, we felt that we really need to help this community even in our own little
way because we really saw the situation of the residents especially the small children in
that area. The interviewees were excited to talk about the status of their community. When
we asked them about the current problems of their community, their answers are mostly
about poverty and lack of jobs. We also noticed their surroundings are untidy. They are
using improper waste segregation and they also do not apply proper sanitation. We as
students can’t provide the solutions they need. The challenge really was to go deeper into
the conversation to know what our class project for their community should be.
Project Planning and Project Proposal

In our project planning, each group had listed the top three problems in the
community according to our respondents’ answers. Each of the group members
discussed about these problems and made a ranking on which of those problems need
most attention and we also made sure that the solution of the problem is something that
can be done or something that is doable by us the NSTP students.
One representative for each group presented to the whole class the top three
problems in the community that each of their members have gathered and its’
corresponding solutions. They explained those different problems and also discussed the
basis of their given rankings to each of those problems. After presenting, we saw that the
problem in proper garbage disposal together with the solution of giving out trash bins to
the residents in that area got the highest rank from us.
With the help of our NSTP teacher, Ms. Anita Jabla, we were able to formulate
plans on what we can offer to the respondents to help them somehow lessen the problem
in their community. Aside from giving out materials for the respondents to use in making
trash bins, we have agreed on giving a seminar about the different kinds of garbage and
how to dispose them properly. We have also agreed to give them a seminar on how to
recycle those garbages and like turning them into decorations and pillows.
We have also created a project proposal so that we can have a detailed description
of the series of activities that aims at solving the garbage problem in the area that we had
visited. We also included the justification or purpose of our project as well as the benefits
that the respondents may get through our project.
Project Implementation
This is the time that we have implemented the projects that the whole class had
agreed on when we had our project planning. Last November 24 2018, we have gathered
our respondents in Busna Covered Court to give them seminars and the materials needed
for the projects. As soon as we arrived, we helped one another in setting up the area and
also in welcoming each of the respondents that came. Some of the respondents were not
around, Ms. Jabla advised us to go to their houses and invite them to come to Busna
Gym, which we did. Though some of the respondents were not around, still, we
appreciated the fact that most of the respondents attended. There were even people who
attended the program even if we were not able to interview them. We somehow felt like
they also gave importance and interest on how we can help their community.
We started the program with a prayer. During the program proper, we gave a
seminar about the different kinds of garbages, health issues and some negative effects
due to improper garbage disposal and of course on how to dispose their garbage properly.
We also taught them on how to make pillows out of junk food/biscuit wrappers and to
make flower decorations out of straw and plastic bottles. We also had a question and
answer portion wherein we asked the attendees some questions and gave them prizes
afterwards. Most of the attendees are really cooperative and showed interest specially in
making flower decors. We also prepared snacks for the attendees that they were able to
share in the later part of our program.

Before we ended the program, we left them the materials in pillow making, flower
decoration and for the trash bins which were the plastic covers, threads and needles,
plastic bottles, straws, bamboos and sacks. The attendees also grouped themselves for
them to be able to help one another in making those projects. Ma’am Edith helped us in
distributing the materials per group, especially the bamboos. We ended our program with
another prayer.
Here is the list of groups who decided to join the Plastic Flower Decor Making,
Pillow Making and Trash Bin Making Competitions.

Attached below is the Attendance Sheet for Project Implementation where the
attendees have listed their names. Not all of our respondents went to see this program,
but we are glad that there are some residents who attended and joined our Project
Implementation program even though they are not part of our first respondents for
Community Needs Assessment and they really listened and showed interest in our
projects presented to them.

Project Monitoring and Closing

During our Project Monitoring on December 1 2018, we went to the houses of our
five participants and judged their homemade waste segregation bins that they labeled as
Biodegradable, Non-biodegradable and Recyclable Materials. Then, we invited them to
come to Busna Gym and bring their livelihood crafts using the recyclable materials
provided for them.

Giving of Awards
On the latter part, the group of judges made their evaluation on the crafts. The
participants went on the stage and received their awards for the champion as well as
consolation prizes for the groups who didn’t make it to the top.

This project could not be done successfully without the benevolent help and
attributes of Mrs. Anita P. Jabla, the supportive adviser of NSTP 112 Section EB1 and
Mrs. Edith Baybayanon the BHV of Purok 12 Barangay 76-A Bucana, Davao City. We
would like to send our gratitude to each and every one, through the teamwork of NSTP
Students of Section EB1.
