The TEDPB

The Training and Employment of Disabled Persons Board (TEDPB) operates under the aegis of the
Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Environment and Sustainable Development and is
governed by the Training and Employment of Disabled Persons Act 1996 (amended 2012).

Location of TEDPB

The Board’s Head Office is based at the Social Security House, Rose Hill. Since 2013,the Head Office of
TEDPB had been relocated from Calebasses to Rose Hill so as to ease accessibility for persons with
disabilities and employers.

Vision, Mission, Principal Objectives of the Board

Vision

Create equal opportunities to mainstream persons with disabilities in employment.

Mission

To promote and sustain inclusion and integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society so
that they also enjoy meaningful and fulling lives.

Functions of the Board

The main functions of the Board are:

a. To act as a facilitator in providing opportunities for work and entrepreneurship;

b. To encourage schemes and projects to work jointly with private sectors and parastatals bodies;

c. To tap into all available resources for the benefit of persons with disabilities ;

d. To work towards an inclusive society;and

e. To educate and sensitise employers on the importance of employing disabled persons and
contribute to remove barriers or prejudices with regard to the employment of such persons.

Budget

The Board receives a yearly grant of Rs. 12,035000 Million as recurrent expenditure. This fund is used to
fund training programmes for pwds, administrative expenses and salary of staff.
The Disability Unit

Introduction

The Disability Unit which functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity,
and Environment & Sustainable Development is the “focal point” for disability issues in Mauritius. It
provides information, counselling, guidance and referral services. It is responsible for the
conceptualization and implementation of disability policies, projects and programmes and facilitates the
process of integration of persons with disabilities in mainstream society. It coordinates matters relating
to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which Mauritius has signed in 2007 and
ratified in 2010. It also provides an array of direct services to persons with disabilities.

(i) Basic Invalidity Pension to children with disabilities under 15 years.

(ii) Refund of Bus Fares to accompanying parents of disabled children attending Schools/Special
Needs Schools

(iii) Refund of Taxi Fares to Students with Severe Disabilities

(iv) Loan for People with Disabilities from Employees Welfare Fund

(v) François Sockalingum Award (Scholarship Scheme for Students with disabilities)

(vi) Concessionary airfare

(vii) Concessionary Fee for Passport

(viii) Free Parking Cards

(ix) Respite Care Programme

(x) Duty-Free Facilities

(xi) Athletes with disabilities

(xii) Artists with Disabilities

(xiii) Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Hydrotherapy Sessions


LLTF

The Lois Lagesse Trust Fund was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1983.

Its main objective is to provide education, training and employment to blind and visually impaired
persons.

It trains blind people in mobility and orientation and provides such facilities as white canes, large prints,
talking library and IT facilities.

It also runs a workshop where artisans with visual impairments perform rattan works.

SWD

The Society for the Welfare of the Deaf provides education, vocational training and counseling to
hearing impaired persons.

It runs a school for hearing impaired children and provides such facilities as sign language interpretation
services, hearing aids and earmoulds.

Its main objective is to promote the integration and empowerment of deaf and hearing impaired
persons.

NCRD

The National Council for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (NCRD) was set up by an Act of
Parliament in 1986.

It is mainly an advisory body which groups the NGOs and DPOs operating in the disability sector.

It is involved in advocacy and its main objective is to promote the welfare of persons with disabilities.
