SPECIFIC COURSE INFORMATION
a. Course Description
The course introduces the fundamental of electrical system. It provides the basic theories and
principles in solving basic electric circuits using Ohm’s law as applied in DC and AC source,
understanding on testing instrument and measurements, basic operation of DC machines involving
motor and generator and the operation of battery. The course also provides the knowledge and
skills in preparing electrical plan as well as the use of standard electrical code.

SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE COURSE
a. Course Objective
The course aims to provide the students understanding of the basic principles of electrical
engineering that are useful in other engineering field. It also aims to provide the students the
fundamentals and principles of electricity and safety and its practical application as seen in
industry.
b. Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Discuss different basic electrical quantities and symbols commonly used in electric circuits.
2. Apply Ohm’s Law in the analysis of DC and AC electric circuits.
3. Differentiate conductors and insulators.
4. Distinguish the characteristics of conductors based on diameter, temperature and current rating.
5. Apply the basic concept of measurements using relevant testing instrument.
6. Apply the basic principles of work, power and energy in electrical machines and appliances.
7. Understand the basic operation of renewable power plants.
8. Properly select the appropriate size and rating of conductors and protective device.
9 Prepare a household electrical plan/layout applying the basic principles of electrical engineering.

II. Basic Electrical Circuits: Fundamental quantities and units of electrical system, Conductors
and its Properties, Volume Resistivity, Temperature-Resistance Relationship, Conductor Splicing,
Taps and Joints, Resistors according to connections, Ohm’s Law in DC Electric Circuits, Hot and
Cold Resistance, Parallel and Series Connections, Batteries

III. Electrical Metering and Measurements: Types and Functions, Voltmeters, Ammeters,
Ohmmeters, Cable Insulation Resistance Testers, Multi-testers, Energy Meters, Frequency Meters,
and Application

IV. Principles Work, Power and Energy: Relationship of Work, Power and Energy, Power
Concepts in DC Machines Involving Motors, Power Concept in DC Machines Involving Generator,
Renewable Energy sources, Energy Reduction Initiatives, Energy Impact to Environment, Energy-
Related Carbon Emission,
