Sample Problem:
A rectangular gate is 5 ft wide and 4 ft high is submerged in water. The water is at 100˚F.
Using the concept of pressure prism, compute for the magnitude of the resultant fluid force
acting on the gate and its respect to the centroid of the gate’s area when:
(a) the gate’s upper edge is in the water surface and the gate is oriented vertically;
(b) the bottom edge of the gate is submerged 9.5 feet from the fluid surface and the
gate is oriented vertically; and
(c) the bottom edge of the gate is submerged 9.5 feet from the fluid surface and the
gate is oriented 𝜃 = 45°.
Your Task:
Keeping all the given conditions, solve the same problem but this time use a rectangular gate
that is 4 ft wide and 5 ft high.
