Time, Speed and Distance
1.
Two trains for Palwal leave Kanpur at 10 a.m and 10:30 am and travel at the s
peeds of 60 kmph and 75 kmph respectively. After how many kilometers from Kan
pur will the two trains be together?
a. 140 km
b. 145 km
c. 150 km
d. 155 km
Ans: c
Explanation:
Let's assume the two trains be A and B.
For train A:
Speed = 60km/hr i.e. In 60km in 1 hr and 30km in 30 mins.
At 10:00 am = Distance covered is 0km.
At 10:30 am = Distance covered is 30km.
At 11:00 am = Distance covered is 60km.
At 11:30 am = Distance covered is 90km.
At 12:00 pm = Distance covered is 120km.
At 12:30 pm = Distance covered is 150km.
Therefore, both the trains meet at 12:30 pm and after traveling 150km.
2.
A man sets out to cycle from Delhi to Rohtak and at the same time, another ma
n starts from Rohtak to cycle to cycle to Delhi. After passing each other the
y completed their journey in (10/3) hours and (16/3) hours respectively.
At what rate does the second man cycle if the first cycle at 8 kmph?
a. 6.12 kmph
b. 6.42 kmph
c. 6.22 kmph
d. 6.32 kmph
Ans: d
Explanation:
A's Speed : B's Speed = rootof(b) : rootof(a)
=> 8 : x = rootof(10/3) : rootof(16/3)
On solving we get,
=> x = 2*rootof(10)
=> x = 2*3.16
=> x = 6.32 kmph.
3.
A train is running at the rate of 60 kmph. A man is also going in the same di
rection on a track parallel to the rails at a speed of 45 kmph. If the train
crosses man in 48 seconds, the length of the train is?
a. 50m
b. 150m
c. 100m
d. 200m
Ans: d
Explanation:
200 m
Speed = distance/time;
Distance= speed * time
= (60-45) * 48 * ( 5/18)
( relative speed in same direction is s1-s2 and kmph to m/sec 5/18)
= 200m
4.
Determine the speed of a train of length 240 meters if it crosses a pole in
15 seconds?
a. 44.4 kmph
b. 57.6 kmph
c. 33.3 kmph
d. 22.2 kmph
Ans: b
Explanation:
Length of the Train = 240 m.
Time taken by it to cross the Pole = 15 seconds.
5.
A train 1200m long crosses a platform in 1.5 min at a speed of 54 kmph . What
is the length of the platform?
a. 150m
b. 120m
c. 175m
d. 100m
Ans: a
Explanation:
Let length of platform = P m
We know, distance = speed × time
1200 + P = 15 × 90
1200 + P = 1350
P = 150 m
In what time will they cross each other. When they are moving in the same dir
ection?
a. 30 sec
b. 42 sec
c. 40 sec
d. 45 sec
Ans: c
Explanation:
Let the speeds of the trains be A and B and
their length be L
A = L/4
B = L/5
now when they move in same direction
to cross one train, the other train has to cover 2L distance
now
relative velocity = L/4 - L/5 = L/20
therefore time taken = 2L/L/20 = 40 sec
7.
The direct distance between City A and City B is 300 miles. The direct distan
ce between city B and City C is 400 miles.
Ans: a
Explanation:
Between 100 and 700
8.
Train ‘A’ leaves a source station for destination station at 11 a.m., running
at the speed of 60 kmph. Train B leaves the same source station to the same d
estination by the same route at 2 p.m. on the same day, running at the speed
of 72 kmph.
a. 4 a.m.
b. 4 p.m.
c. 5 a.m.
d. 5 p.m.
Ans: c
Explanation:
With 60 kmph in 3 hours train ‘A’ covers 180 km.
Train B speed is 12kmph more than train ‘A’.
Because train B started 3 hours later so it has to cover 180 extra with extra 12 kmph speed.
Time taken is = 180/12 = 15 hours
So, 15 hours from 2 p.m. is 5 a.m. on the next day
