Continuing Professional Development

1. Explain the methods of professional development below

Professional Description
Development
Method
Induction training Induction training is when you start a new job
and they do things in order to give you more
of an insight on the company. Inductions can
be as little as 1 day, however it could also last
up to a few weeks depending on how much
depth the company wants to go into. induction
training might include going on a tour of the
company so that you are able to see where
everything is. Within this tour they might take
you around to show you the different
departments, where the toilets are, the fire
exit doors, and many other different things. It
may also include going through powerpoints
to learn about health and safety, or spending
a day in each other departments so that you
can get a better understanding of what they
do in the different departments.
Performance A performance appraisal is a meeting that an
appraisal employee and an employer must have every
sixth months. Within this meeting, they would
discuss what has gone well and what hasn’t
gone so well within the last 6 months. It is a
time to review the progress that the employee
has made. As well as this, an employer would
come up with some goals and targets for the
employee to reach before their next meeting
so that they are able to ensure that they are
continuously making progress. One of the
goals might be to complete a training course
or spend a day in another department so that
they are able to gain more of an insight on
what the different departments do.
On the job/ off the On the job training is when you are working
job training within a job but being trained at the same
time. This would include shadowing somebody
else that is higher than you so that you are
able to see how they do their job. This would
give you a better idea of how things are done
efficiently. It would also help you to gain and
acquire new skills by simply just observing
what the other person is doing.
Off the job training is the complete opposite of
this and is when you have to take time off
work in order to take part in a training course
so that you are able to learn some skills that
you may not be able to learn while working at
the same time. For example, a manager might
have to go on a training course to learn more
about emotional intelligence so that he knows
how to deal with personal problems that some
of the people he is managing may have. The
training course might be based in London and
he might be working in Bradford, and so he
would have to take time off work in order to
complete this course.
Coaching and Coaching is when a person that is experience
mentoring within an area of expertise is given the
responsibility of supporting someone that isn’t
as experienced as them. they are a lot more
hands on than a manager, due to them
actually doing the job too and making sure
that the person they are coaching is getting a
better understanding and more experience
within the job role.
Graduate training A graduate training program is for eople have
programme just newly finished their degree. This is
because when you have done a degree, you
have learnt all of the information for you to be
able to pass the qualification and earn the
certificates needed, however you haven't
learnt how to actually do the job role.

As you can see from the picture above, I have

inserted a screenshot in which you are able to
see a Graduate Management Training Scheme.
The successful candidate for this program
would be able to gain more experience on how
to manage people in business most likely and
this would help him to move further and get
promoted quicker within the business that
they are working at in order to get a better
job and not have to work their way up from
the bottom really slowly.
Management Management training is for those people that
training have been promoted up to a managing role
due to their intellect, but aren’t very good
with people. Management training would help
them to get a better understanding of how to
handle the responsibility that they will have to
deal with. It gives them advice and techniques
on how to deal with the pressure and gives
them the ability to properly deal with
situations and problems that will be coming
their way as a manager. There are lots of
different things that you would be able to
learn if you decided to join a management
training course. For example, you might
become educated on stepping up to
management, emotional intelligence, or things
like organisational resilience.
Secondments Secondment is when you are put in another
department in order for you to be able to
learn more about the company and the
different job roles within it. this gives the
employees more experience within different
job roles so that if cover is ever needed, they
can use the person that was involved in the
secondment. For example, if somebody dies or
falls pregnant and leaves for maternity leave,
they might need to arrange cover urgently
and so they could get cover from the person
that did the secondment.
Shadowing This is when you become another person's
shadow so that you are able to see exactly
what they're doing. this gives you the
opportunity to pick up on different skills and
techniques that the person does in order to
get the jobs done. it gives the person that’s
doing the shadowing to have the opportunity
to ask any questions they might have so that
they would be able to also do this job one day.
For example, someone that is doing a degree
in teaching might shadow an actual teacher so
that they are able to pick up the techniques
and real life skills that are used within the
classroom. this would help the aspiring
teacher to get more experience within
teaching so that they are able to do a better
job.
E-Learning E-Learning is learning that is done on the
internet. It is training courses that are done
online. For example, you are able to do a
Level 2 Hygiene course food Food and
Catering online. this means that you don’t
have to travel to a certain place, you just
need to make sure that you have an internet
connection so that you are able to complete
the course.
Vocational & Vocational courses are designed in order for
professional you to learn in a practical way about the
courses different things that you would need to know
in order to do a specific job role. The provided
training and the qualification needed in order
to do these jobs, for example, it is illegal in
this country to deal with electricity or become
an electrician without completing and passing
the specific courses needed in order to do
this.In order to become an electrician you do
not need to complete a degree in a specific
field. All you need to have is to have an
industry recognised level 3 qualification for
example a level 3 diploma in electrotechnical
services.
Job rotation Doing the same job role for a long time may
make you become stale when working. this
means that you aren’t working as well as you
can due to the boredom of having to perform
the same job role over and over again. As a
result of this, a lot of companies do job
rotations so that their employers are doing
different things. This ensures that they don’t
end up getting brain dead or bored of their
job. if they get bored of their job, then that
would mean they wouldn’t be doing the work
to the best possible quality that they can. For
example, your job might be to do the filing for
3 months and another persons job might be to
do the scanning and attaching. After three
months, the manager might make you both
swap jobs so that you can experience
something different and do something else for
a change.
Lifelong learning Lifelong learning is all to do with making sure
that you are always learning no matter what
your age is. For example, the IT Sector is
currently growing rapidly and it never really
stops. Lifelong learning is when you are
always learning within your job and not just
doing the same thing. It is about making sure
that you are always seeking to know more
knowledge - whether that is professionally or
personally.
Retraining Retraining is when you are retrained so that
you are able to do a different job. For
example, if a person is made redundant then
it is the company's responsibility to try and
find a similar job within the company so that
has similar hours, similar pay and similar
responsibilities. Due to the fact that it is a new
job, the company might have to re train the
person that has become redundant in order to
ensure that they are able to do this new job.
this would also ensure that they would be able
to work within the company.

2. Explain which of these methods you may need to

achieve your career aim and why

Induction Training
I would need to have induction training at the company that I would
be working at because this would help me to gain a better
understanding of the place that I am working. it would give me a
better understanding of how I would need to do my job. I think this
is important for every single job role and not just mine, because
when a person is new to the company, they usually don't know very
much about it and so it is a good idea to make sure that when I
have become an HR Manager, I get some induction training so that
I am able to learn about the different rules and regulations of the
company. this would help to ensure that I am able to do my job to
the best of its ability, and cater my work for the company
specifically.

On / Off The Job Training

I would definitely need to make sure that I was getting some on the
job training. this may include me having to shadow someone in a
similar position as me so that I am able to understand how to carry
out tasks a lot better. it might simply be learning how to use the
software that the company uses so that I am able to do my work. if
the software that the company are using is going to be changed to
a different software, then they might send me on some off the job
training so I can go and learn how to use the software and then
come back to teach everyone else. As well as this, they might
decide on sending me on a course that helps you deal with how to
deal with your employees problems. This is because as a manager,
I would be responsible for everybody working under me and so the
people that work of me might need to tell me their problems and
my company might send me on a course where I learn about how to
deal with these problems so that I am able to gain the best effort
out of my team members.

Management Training
I think the most significant method would definitely have to be
management training. this is due to the fact that my ideal job would
be an HR Manager, and so I would need to be making sure that I
was going on some management training programmes so that I
could definitely do my job to the best of my ability. I could maybe
do this by joining the programmes in management training that I
feel I am not very good at, for example, I might decide that there is
too much pressure for the role and need some techniques that are
going to help me with this and so I might join an emotional
intelligence management training programmes so that i am able to
gain acquire the skills and techniques on how to be more
sympathetic with the people in my company.
