Experiment:

Study of Pneumatic PI controller.

Theory:

The experimental setup is designed on the feed back control. System Process diagram of the set up is shown in

Fig. 1 Control Block diagram of setup

The loop consists of following elements generally:

1. Process (Tank).
2. Final Control Element (Pneumatic controlled valve)
4. Controller (Pneumatic PI-controller)
1. Set P pressure setting dial for setting pressure.
2. Error generator (Bourdan tube)
3. Controller (flapper nozzle & bellows)
4. Pressure Transducer (Pressure gauge)

The overall transfer function for control loop is polynomial, hence any step change in set point will introduce
oscillating response with varying amplitude and certain period of oscillation. Gain of final control element, process
and transducer is fixed due to their mechanical construction. Hence ultimate output (controlled variable, Pcontrolled )
depends mainly on the controller transfer function.

The PI- controller transfer function is given by:

Y(s)
X(s) ( )
= Kc 1 + 1
τΙ s
Where = Kc - gain
τΙ - integral time constant.

The integral action reduces the offset of the controlled variable introduced by proportional action of the controller.

Since PI- controller consists of two parameters Kc and τI. So the response achieved depends mainly on values of
these two parameters.

Procedure

1. Open the controller and study carefully the various part as shown in figure above.
2. Connect the air source to tank inlet.
3. Set controller in auto mode via turning auto/manual switch to auto mode
4. Set reset rate to minimum
5. Set proportional band to maximum.
6. Set the pressure set point in the tank via set point adjustment knob to 50%.
7. wait till valve operation starts to release the air. Count and note number of release cycles in a minute.
8. Now decrease the proportional band and repeat the step 7 for different values of proportional band.
9. Set the proportional band to any desired value.
10. Increase the reset rate and repeat step 7 for different values of reset rate.
11. For any set values of proportional band, reset rate and set point, watch carefully the movement of flapper
nozzle assembly movement.

Precaution: do not touch flapper nozzle assembly.
