Assess, Educate, Advise Model

Key Point
It is equally important to know WHEN and WHEN NOT to recommend botanicals to patients. Following
the Assess, Educate, Advise model will help you make that decision.

Step 1: Assess
Ask these questions before recommending a botanical:
• Is my patient interested in taking a botanical?
• Is there scientific evidence to support its use?
• What is the safety profile of the botanical?
• Are there any contraindications to use of the botanical?

Hint: Listen for clues from the patient:

Can I avoid these Are there any Is there anything

side effects? cheaper options? else I can try?

Step 2: Educate
Discuss the best botanical options that may help the patient:
• Present scientific evidence
• Identify risks and benefits
• Compare with pharmaceutical options

Step 3: Advise
Help patients select a quality product and discuss important safety concerns:
• Suggest what types of products to look for
• Identify potential side effects and/or safety concerns
• Provide sources for more information
