This Safety Manual is compiled to draw attention of users of the potential hazards
while working on experiments and projects in the High Voltage Laboratory. Students
using the High Voltage Laboratory must read this "Safety Manual" thoroughly before
they start the experiment. It is important that students report all accidents and damages
to the technician/Lecturer concerned.
1. No student(s) are allowed to work in the Laboratory in the absence of either the
Lecturers or the Technician.
2. The key to turn on/off the power to the Impulse Generator and the key for the
door of the test area are held together by a key ring this is to ensure that entry
into the test area is not possible when the power to the Generator is turned on.
3. Switch off the power to the Generator and visually check the earthing before
entering the test area.
4. First hang the earthing stick onto test object and secondly run the grounding
belt to the generator by pushing the grounding-in button immediately after
entering the test area. When the preparation work inside the test area is
completed (i) run out the belt by pushing the "ground-out" button and (ii)
remove the earthing stick.
5. No student(s) should be allowed to change the connection of the generator
without the supervision of the lecturer or the technician.
6. Sufficient clearance from the surrounding should be provided for the test object
(at least 2 metres/500 kV).
7. Do not close the door of the test area when there is anyone inside. Lock the
door immediately after you leave the test area.
8. Make very sure that NO ON inside the test area before the power to the
GENERATOR is turned on.
9. Press the "H.V.LOCK" red button or the "HIGH VOLTAGE" red button on
control panel in case of any abnormalities or danger.
