MegaQuake: Hour That Shook Japan

The video is a documentary about a disastrous event that took place on Japan, it
helps educate and inform the people around the world about the massive earthquake
and tsunami that happened in 2011 that took the lives of more than 13,000 people. It is
a documentary that touches the hearts of the Japanese people as they take a rewind on
what happened that day. It is also for people who lives near the pacific ring of fire or any
other fault line , it warns us all to be careful and always be prepared because we never
know when and where will an earthquake happen.

This earthquake happened a few years ago but it is still fresh in the memory of
those experienced it and those who lose a loved one. March 11, 2011, everything
seems fine and the sea is very calm that time, no sign of the danger that is bound to
happen. Japan is located near the Pacific Ring of fire, one of the most volatile region on
this planet. The earthquake occurred when a section of this fault line, 80 miles away
from the shore of Japan and 20 miles down the earth’s crust, the pacific plate subducts
underneath the plate of Japan therefore causing stress. Due to this stress, the plates
snapped and then the huge earthquake was produced. They were able to measure the
force generated by the earthquake and it had a magnitude of 9.0-9.1 and this huge
earthquake that occurred on the sea triggered the massive tsunami.

The video also included some clips recorded by the survivor during the
earthquake. One of the video showed the terror that a mother and his son faced. The
ground was shaking violently and the things inside the house are falling so they decided
it would be safer to go outside the house. The shaking lasted for a few minutes, then a
series of aftershocks came. A total of 5,229 aftershocks were recorded, some of these
even had a magnitude of 6. The seismic shocks also caused liquefaction, water

A few other clips shows the tsunami coming at the speed of 5000 miles an hour
to the shore of Japan. When the plates snapped, it caused a displacement on the water
creating the tsunami. The people near the coastline barely had enough time to recover
from the earthquake. They quickly went to higher place and the clips even shows how
strong the force of the tsunami is, even a warehouse didn’t stood a chance.

I learned that we as humans are powerless when it comes to situations like

these. We never know when will an earthquake or tsunami occur it comes out of
nowhere and it is really devastating sometimes, it does not come with a warning so we
should always be prepared. This documentary is very helpful to the people as it
educates the viewers about these disastrous events. They also predicted that the next
mega earthquake might occur along the San Andreas Fault since it’s along one of the
sections in the Pacific Ring of Fire as well, and they said that it could be a big one too
so the people near that fault must always be cautious.
