Vocabulary Unit 5 Part 1:

Demand = request - to ask for something forcefully, in a way that shows that you do notexpect to
be refused;

Tackle = deal with - to try to deal with something or someone;

Enroll = to put yourself or someone else on an official list for an activity or formembership in a group,
or to accept someone in such a list

Deal with (a problem) = to be about or be on the subject of something

Maternity leave= a period in which a woman is legally allowed to be absent from work in
the weeks before and after she gives birth

Wouldn’t mind doing = to be OK with it, or to not be bothered by it

Phrases for expressing the future:

BE ABOUT TO = We use be about to + base form of the verb to refer to things that we expect to happen very
soon.

BE ON POINT OF = We can also use be on the point of + -ing form to refer to things that we expect to
happen very soon. Be on the point of is similar to be just about to.

BE DUE TO = We use be due to + base form of the verb to talk about things that are scheduled.

BE TO = We use be due to + base form of the verb to talk about things that are scheduled.

TO INTEND TO = to have as a plan or purpose

TO BE THINKING OF = to considerate on doing something

TO HOPE TO = to want something to happen or to be true, and usually have a good reason to think that it
might

The word stress in word families:

Remember that

- In nouns which end with –tion or –sion, the stress is always on preceding syllable (distraction,
proDUCtion);
- The letter –e on the first syllable of a word, when it is unstressed, shortens to /i/(Experience);
- Succeed is pronounced /səkˈsiːd/ not /sukˈsiːd/.
