Key Assignment

a. As a leader, what kind of corporate culture would you think would be

effective? Analyze the context of your institution/ company. What can the
managers do to change the corporate culture of the company where they
work?
b. What can the managers do to change the corporate culture of the company
where they work?

Corporate culture refers to the shared values, attitudes, standards, and beliefs that characterize members
of an organization and define its nature. Corporate culture is rooted in an organization's goals, strategies,
structure, and approaches to labor, customers, investors, and the greater community. As such, it is an
essential component in any business's ultimate success or failure.

Corporate cultures, whether implemented intentionally or grown organically, reach to the core of a
company’s ideology and practice, and affect every aspect of a business, from each employee to customer
to public image. The current awareness of corporate culture is more acute than ever.

As a leader I would be the one swinging the pendulum and the success of the organization would be in
my hand. Hence, I would like to have established an organization culture where every employee is
motivated, empowered with a strong organization vision, well guided and trained, given responsibility
and have morale values.

As a leader, your motivations and wants trickle down to your staff as they are the soldiers you employ to
carry out your will. Depending on what you are motivated by, your organizational culture will surely
respond in kind.

The foundation of any organizations is established on the vision of its leaders. These individuals craft it,
share it and watch it come to life.

An effective leader shares their values and views on work with staff members to act as a compass to
follow. Providing this awareness allows staff to work as a team to act out organizational strategies. It
also reassures them that their actions are for the good of the organization.

Leaders are your coaches. And like with any team, your employees expect leaders to give them the
winning plays.

This means more than just having vision. It involves developing a framework that outlines goals, strategy
and details necessary to push your organization forward.

Employees always need to know what is expected of them in order to properly communicate their
organization’s purpose. They must know expected levels of productivity, the channels to conduct
business as well as the proper image to maintain.

Develop a culture of encouragement. Let your employees know they are doing a good job. Acknowledge
mistakes but also give guidance on how they may improve. Do not forget that leaders are the foundation.
If they are not held responsible for the morale of their staff, then the culture of their organization can fall
apart around them.
Leaders have a huge influence on organizational culture. If you are having issues establishing a strong
organizational culture, you may want to look in the mirror – a strong culture starts with leadership. You
need to follow through with what you say and be accountable for your actions — or your team will lose
faith in your word and your ability to be an effective leader, rendering your influence null and void.
More concerning is they will model those same behaviors and resent it when you expect more that you
deliver yourself.
As a leader following can be done to have impact on organizational culture:

1. Model Behaviors
2. Establish a propose to believe in
3. Set expectations and help people build the required skills
4. Reinforce a culture of accountability
5. Make it personal for your health

Self-Evaluation /Assignment

What methods of internal communication would you like to use in your company:
email, memo, and notice, articles in the magazine or phone call? Why do you
choose them? Write a memo of your supervisor with your justification.

There are different methods of internal communication that I could use in my Company. However, I
strongly believe that email and memo are vital tools for effective communication.

I think so because of the fact that the world has changed into digital world and everyone uses internet
frequently and efficiently. The email is a one way of effective communication which can be achieved at
workplace. Another advantages with email is they are recorded for future reference and helps to
overcome any dispute arising because of miss-communication.

Nowadays trend is to use the own company email address which is assigned to any new employee joining
the company. It increases the authority of the communication made and hence effective communication
can be achieved. In addition to above mentioned merit it also increases the level of confidentiality
between employer and employees.

Another effective way of communication I believe is, issuing a memo. It does help in an effective
communication by issuing hand to hand written memos. They are recorded for future reference which
helps in solving any dispute arising due to miss-communication. This form of memo is also very helpful in
an Engineering Company where a memo is issued to the Contractor for any work to be carried. Those
memo does the effective and authoritive communication between the Engineer and the Contractor.

Sanima Hydro and Engineering Pvt. Ltd. is a Company providing a consulting service in a
Hydropower sector of Nepal. It is well established organization in the context of Nepal and doing
very well.
The company is managed by very professional, dynamic and result oriented people who thrives
in hard work for success. A detail visit was made to understand the recent leadership and
management situation of the Company. The company is run by Executive Chairman who is one
of the most experience person in the field of Hydropower in Nepal. He is very positive, result
oriented who believes in quality work is the only way to success.

situation of the Company when seen from outside is very good and running well.

To further study in detail, an interview was arranged with different levels of the employee within
the organization. The reaction found was mixed. It is obvious that nothing can be perfect
however, close to it can be achieved. The senior management was very positive and excited to
share the excellent results achieved as of this date. They clearly stated the Company Vision and
corporate culture that exist in a Company at the moment. Every employees are given equal
responsibility and opportunity within the organization. Training is organized very often to all the
concerned employee in the relevant field.

Mid-level management shared the encouraging nature of senior management. However, they
expressed that there are often times when the senior management interferes directly in the
decision made by the Mid-Level management. It was understood that they were often limited
with the decision making ability. Apart from that, it was understood that work environment is
very good where everyone shared the Company values.

Common staff had the mix feeling and stated that more could be done to retain the staff. Enough
responsibility was given and would be good if the more exposure could be given.
The main problem that was observed during the investigation was lack of exposure and
motivation. It can be solved to many extent by organizing various training program not limiting
to within the organization.
