Culture Lesson

Third Grade
“I Come From” Museum

Student chose 4 parts of their culture that they wanted to share

with the class
Steps of the lesson:

● We had a class discussion at the carpet about what they thought

culture meant
○ “It’s about which country your family is from”
○ “It’s about tradition”
○ “It’s about your skin color and where you’re from”
Steps of the lesson:

● I then asked them to imagine they aliens from outer space coming to
Earth to see humans for the first time.
○ What would they describe about you? What is unique to you.
○ “Humans get taller as they get older”
○ “We go to school”
○ “We eat different food”
● We talked about how our culture was our uniqueness that makes up
our life.
Steps of the lesson:

● Each student got 4 cards that said “I come from..”

● To be more structured, I asked them to talk about their food, language,
country of significance to them, and another thing of their choosing.
○ They could draw or write in English or another language

Student Examples:
In class reflection:

● They made an accordian book of their cards to display on the desk as

they walked around
● After, we had a class discussion about what we thought was interesting
about each others culture.
● A few students bonded over similarities they had
My Reflections:
● I would have loved to make this a larger project and have the students
bring in a physical representation of how they view their culture
● I allowed students to try and use different languages but they wanted
help with spelling and I didn’t know how to help
● I think it might have book good for the students to share their book
with the class rather than a gallery walk because I don’t know how
much of the other work they read.
● If I were do this again, I would have allotted more time for detailed
pictures and coloring and for the students to create a front cover.
