Book: Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, Duncan Tonatiuh, 2013 
Grade level: Third grade 
 
 
Multicultural theme of the book​:  
● Immigration, Family settings, hardships   
 
Materials needed:  
● The book P ​ ancho Rabbit and the Coyote   
● An activity book report sheet 
● Crayons/Markers 
 
Standards: 
★ CCSS.ELA - Literacy RL. 3.3 - Describe characters in a story and explain how their 
actions contribute to the sequence of events 
★ CCSS.ELA - Literacy RI. 3.7 - Use information gained from illustrations and the words 
in a text to demonstrate an understanding of the text 
 
 
Objective: T ​ he students will be able to identify what it means to be an immigrant and 
analyze the struggles and hardships they go through by discussing the reason for these 
struggles.  
 
Procedure:  
 
➔ Introduce: Today we will be reading about a family who works hard for their dreams 
and works together. Ask “What was something you and your family worked hard for” 
or “When was there a situation where you and your family looked out for each 
other?”  
➔ Read: Teacher will read the book 
➔ Discuss: We will talk about  
◆ “Where did the family live” 
◆ “What are they striving for?” 
◆ “Why is it important to not talk to strangers?”  
◆ “What did one of the characters do that resulted in a journey and what was 
their reason for that decision?”  
◆ “What does it mean to sacrifice for something you want?”  
 
 
Activities:  
● The students will get into five groups to discuss the story and then work individually 
on their book report  
● The book report will consist of the following worksheet

 
 
Evaluation​: The teacher will walk around and help the students by answering questions and 
discussing more about the book. When everyone is finished, we will group back together 
and discuss what we wrote on the book report.
