Objective: The student will create the letter to a place/person of their choosing and be able to

identify the greeting, body, and closing.

Materials:

❖ Colored paper

❖ Crayons/Markers

❖ Gel (colorful) pens

❖ Red Pens

❖ Pencils

❖ Notebook paper

❖ Envelopes

Procedures:

1. Once it’s time for our English slot in our day, the teacher will explain to the class

that we will be creating a letter to a person of our choosing. The students will sit

at their desks while the teachers turn on the overhead projector to show an

example letter.
2. The teacher will then read the letter to the class and after reading the letter, the

teacher will switch from the letter to opening up a new Word Document.

3. With the word document on display, the teacher will then explain the first part of

what needs to be included in the letter.

4. First, we will begin with the greeting. Explain to them that the greeting is how we

start a new conversation and say hello.

a. “A letter has parts that make up the whole letter in the correct format.

What is the first thing we do when we go up to someone or someone

comes up to us? We say hello! In the letter, you will be saying hello to

whom the letter is addressed to.”

5. The teacher will look towards the class and ask who should we address this letter

to? If no decision is made within a minute or two the teacher will state the letter is

addressed to our principle.

6. The teacher will then proceed to write down the greeting in the Word Document

presented in front of the students.

7. “Next will be the body, this will consist of what you will be talking about in the

letter. Sometimes it can have one paragraph or five. It all depends on where it is

going and what it is you will be talking about.” The teacher writes one brief

sentence in the body area before proceeding to the next part.

8. The teacher will then explain that we end the letter with a closing. “When we first

come across someone we say a greeting, what do we say when we are done

talking to them? We say goodbye! It is the same thing as saying goodbye in the
letter. There are several different ways of saying goodbye through the letter. Let’s

choose which one to use!”

9. We will then proceed to briefly go over the different forms of closing and choose

“Sincerely, Ms. Antunezs’ students.”

10. After closing the letter, it will be explained that the students will be creating their

own letter of one paragraph (3 sentences) to someone of their choosing. It could

be a friend, a teacher, an adult, a family member or your favorite tv character. I

will be looking for the greeting, body, and the closing.

11. The students will then take out their notebook paper and have time to create a

letter individually but can talk amongst themselves for help or ideas.

12. Walking around I will start passing out the colored paper and markers/crayons

and red pens.

13. After passing them out and giving the students time, the teacher will ask the

students to pay attention to the next task.

14. I will then explain that it is important when sending a letter, it must have the

correct spelling. Then I will have the students switch papers with the person next

to them to grade with the red pens. The students will have 10 minutes to grade the

other students' papers before switching back.

15. Then I will have the students rewrite the corrected form onto the colored paper

that was passed out earlier. The students will have the option from choosing

markers to crayons and can add drawings if they wanted.

16. Then the students will finish the letter, fold the letter inside the envelope and turn

it into the teacher.

Assessment: I will grade students on their following directions throughout the lesson. In the

book, it talks about constructive teaching. In constructive teaching, they inform us how “the

teacher creates a social milieu within the classroom, a community of learners, that allows

students to reflect and talk with one another as they construct meaning and solve problems.” I

will be instructing students on what they need to complete the requirements and help them with

any questions they have. Also having other students grade their papers allows them to help one

another by sharing their knowledge. Once I have the letters I will be checking for the greeting,

body, and closing with correct spelling.
