Project:
Driving Question: How can we use our Environment and modern-day tools and technology to
build FIRST® city to last?

Tips- Project:

- Choose a project which leads to an actual product you can physically show
the judges, but make sure the product gets built.

- Communicate with officials related to your project area- This should be more
than just sending them a generic email and hoping they reply. Tell them about
your project and ask them for feedback

- If possible, try to implement your solution- projects that relate to the school
environment are usually the easiest to implement because you have a captive
audience

- Have a creative presentation (not a TV interview) and make sure you have
comprehensive documentation.

Tips- Programming:

- USE SENSORS, line following, or try to implement a touch sensor

- Comment programs so that anyone can read them

- Use myblocks

- Use a master program for mission selection

Tips- Robot:

- Make all equipment detachable by using dog gears

- Have some unusual mechanisms in your attachments, for example gear

trains, rack and pinion, one-way latches and pneumatics

- Document your designs in your engineering notebook

- Also write up how you decided which missions to choose (difficulty vs points
matrix is a standard method).

- Always do missions in runs (multiple missions together) and include a map

of the field illustrating this.

Today, we selected our missions. Our aim was to score the most points in the least possible
amount of time. We first gave ourselves 40 seconds out of the 2 and a half minutes for
commuting around the map, as well as changing out attachments. We then estimated how long
it would take us to do each activity and subtracted it from the remaining time we had, and
calculated how many points we can score. We plotted our missions so the least flexible
missions would be at the top and the most flexible missions would stay at the bottom.

1. Bridge + flags = 20 pts + 15pts + 15 pts. 50 pts in approximately 10 seconds

2. Crane Mission = 20 pts + 15 pts + 15 pts. 50 pts in approximately 7 seconds
3. Release swing. 20 pts in approximately 3 seconds
4. Blue car down on elevator. 15 pts in approximately 3 seconds
5. Monument in circle. 15 pts in approximately 4 seconds
6. Stand steel structure. 20 pts in 4 seconds
7. Inspection drone + Bat = 10 pts + 10 pts. 20 pts in approximately 7 seconds
8. Traffic Jam lifted. 10 points in approximately 3 seconds
9. Unit is supported by large branches of tree. 10 pts in approximately 3 seconds
10. Leave 6 precision tokens on the field. 60 pts in approximately 40 seconds

Total points: 260 pts in approximately 86 seconds/ 1 min 26 seconds.

Today, we worked on developing our chassis. The design involves using the large motors to
power the wheels, and incorporating ‘dog gears’ into our medium motor’s output. This will allow
us to remove and attach mechanisms efficiently and quickly, providing us with more moving
time on the field. We wanted our EV3 Brick to be easily accessible, so it is mounted to the top of
our robot. We have used a ‘ball’ design for our rear wheel, so it provides us with stability and
maximum maneuverability.
