Introduction of Indus Hospital

In the year 2005, the Islamic Mission Trust donated a non-functioning hospital building to
founder Dr. Abdul Bari Khan. This building was renovated and made operational in the year 2007.
The Indus Hospital was set up as a tertiary care and multi-disciplinary hospital with 150 beds in
the area of Korangi. It serves as an absolutely free of charge hospital with no cash counter.

The founder of the Indus Hospital, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, and co-founders served in the
public sector hospitals for many years. During their time at government run hospitals they
witnessed the plight of the poverty stricken patients of Karachi. It was at this time that they
envisioned to make a multi-disciplinary tertiary care hospital that served the under-served
population of Karachi with free and quality treatment.

The Indus Hospital has now evolved into a health network with hospitals and public health
out-reach clinics spread all across Pakistan serving the under-served population of Pakistan with
free of charge, indiscriminate and quality treatment.

VISION OF INDUS
Excellence in Healthcare for all to Please Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

MISSION OF INDUS

To focus on creating an excellence-driven, comprehensive, compassionate, free of charge

and replicable healthcare system accessible to all. Be a not-for-profit entity, managed with the
Islamic concept of Waqf and funded through donations and Zakat. Adhere to ethical best practices
in all aspects of its operations, while following the Shariah and the Law of the Land. Empower its
employees for their spiritual and professional growth. Enhance and build human capacities through
quality education and research.

Indus Hospital Health Network

The Indus Hospital is continually pushing its geographic boundaries of service delivery
disease prevention in an effort to provide patients with comprehensive healthcare absolutely free
all across Pakistan. Hence, it has now evolved into a network of hospitals spread all across
Pakistan, some of them are owned and managed by Indus Hospitals and some of the hospitals’
management has been handed over to Indus Health Network (IHN) through a public-private
partnership agreement with the provincial governments.

Establishment of hospitals across Pakistan outlined the need for early detection and
prevention as important components of holistic healthcare provision. To address this need IHN has
initiated a number of public health outreach programs across 41 districts of the country.

The Indus Health Network has set up regional blood centers under the public private
partnership agreement in order to facilitate blood transfusions and blood management at
Government owned facilities. The Physical Rehabilitation centers are also housed in many of the
IHN managed and owned hospitals across Pakistan.

Definition of Leadership
Some definitions of leadership, which express leadership in very well manner. These are
as mention below.

 “Leadership occurs when one person induces others to work toward some predetermined
objectives.” — Massie
 “Leadership is the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of a subordinate or group
and persuade them to follow a particular course of action.” — Chester Bernard
 “Leadership is a two-way street, loyalty up and loyalty down. Respect for one’s
superiors; care for one’s crew.” — Grace Hopper
 “A manager takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they
don’t necessarily want to go but ought to.” — Rosalyn Carter
There are 10 ways to define the art of leading which mention as are under:

 Vision.
 Motivation.
 Serving.
 Empathy.
 Creativity.
 Thoroughness.
 Managing.
 Team building.
 Taking risks.
 Improving.
As we visited Indus Hospital and found all of above qualities in Dr. Abdul Bari and his
all colleagues whom started working to establish Indus Hospital. In lighten of above thing, here
are our findings from that visit which we have done.

1. Vision:
Leading means having a vision and sharing it with others. In 1986 when Karachi
was hit by a bomb blast that the city faced the first emergency of its kind, causing Civil
Hospital Karachi to be inundated with the injured in critical condition and on the brink of
9|Page

death. The hospital was unable to cope with the victims bought in, causing many doctors
and hospital staff much distress. After nearly a decade of working with PWA, a small group
of doctors realized that this was not enough. There were still scores of people who were in
dire need of free treatment for various diseases and there was very little they were being
able to do at the government facility. That is the life turning point of Dr. Abdul Bari Khan
and his colleagues. And in 2005 they started working for that vision which they all seen in
1986.

2. Motivation:
A leader knows how to motivate better than anyone else, so Dr. Abdul Bari Khan
did this in very good manner. He keep his colleagues and all team members motivated well
in this whole period since 2005 till to date. Through motivation, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan
channels his co-workers energy and professional potential in order to achieve that objective
which they set.

3. Serving:
The leader is at the service of the team, and not the other way around. From
beginning till now Dr. Abdul Bari Khan always there to support his co-workers and team
member whom need help. Dr. Abdul Bari strongly believe that what so ever you do for
man-king in your life that will be rewarded in your eternal life. Keeping believe on this
ideology he always help other people, he also inculcate this ideology in his all team
members.

4. Empathy:
Basic qualities of any leader seeking success is precisely emotional intelligence,
that ability often innate that makes leaders put themselves in the place of others, understand
their concerns and solve problems. When we ask that if anything happen to your own
family members than can you prefer Indus hospital. He reply with very confidence that
“Yes I do, because I setup this hospital considering that every human have equal rights.”
He also said that everyone always said that quotation that “Put yourself in other shoe, so
you come to know how he is feeling” and I strongly believe on this and work according to
this quotation in my life. That is also teaching of our religion that everyone is equal.

5. Creativity:
The definition of leadership also has to do with creativity. Good leaders are able to
create an environment that will encourage all the members of their team to develop their
skills and imagination, so that they can contribute to the common project and vision of the
company. In Indus hospital Dr. Abdul Bari and his co-workers are the best example of
creativity. Because they start working on existence things with different idea, and that idea
change the dimension of health care. In-fact Dr. Abdul Bari and his co-workers are still
working on this creativity thought, which eventually reflect in all Indus Hospital staff.

6. Thoroughness:
A good leader sets the bar high for their people, because they want to reach the
goals and bring the best out of their teams. Only a demanding leader will achieve great
results. In reference of Indus Hospital Dr. Abdul Bari set high service bar in health sector.
And he always encourage his team to come up with new idea which create great impact on
health services. Those demand from management allow everyone to work for productivity,
and to be best in health industry.

7. Managing:
The leader must be at the forefront to lead and guide their team throughout the
whole process until the goal is reached. But besides being that “torchbearer”, leaders also
know when to step back and make their team take the initiative. Those individuals whom
executed Indus Hospital idea work on every aspect in Hospital. They set example for other
staff and also lead their respective team with great courage. In the beginning Dr. Abdul
Bari gather his all co-doctors on one page and execute the idea of Indus Hospital in reality.
Also he is still working with that energy.

8. Team building:
True leadership is about working in a team to reach a common goal. People
management is one of the most difficult tasks faced by leaders. Dr. Abdul Bari always
prefer to hire those people whom have strong team members ability. Because he know
importance of every team members. That’s why he always prefer those whom can work
very well in team and achieve goal and learnt lots of things out of it. As per Dr. Abdul Bari
11 | P a g e

he believe that every human have different abilities and leader should know that how he
can take advantage of that person.

9. Taking Risk:
The leader is the one responsible for taking the risks that others are not willing to
take. They are confident enough to make a decision, and if they make a mistake, the leader
must have the courage to rectify. Dr. Abdul Bari started working on Indus Hospital idea,
although at that time lots of people asked him that this will not going to work, be he took
risk and start working on it. Now due to his outstanding work he got Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in
2015 & Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2019.

10.Improving:
True leadership seeks continuous improvement. Leaders have the ability to turn the
people in their teams into stars, people who have improved and developed their skills
through the influence of their leader. Dr. Abdul Bari started learning programs in his
hospital for his employees. So they can improve their skill and grow further. His learning
team always come with new and different technology, and whenever his team come-up
with any new learning thing, he always attend learning program so his team can get
encouragement and motivation.

LEARNINGS
Aqib Idrees
Being group leader and individual I have learnt lots of basic but most important things,
which I always dream to practice in my personal and professional life. Very first thing which I
learned is that everyone should not dream only good or big in his life, also work hard on that dream
as well so one day you can see that dream coming to fulfil. That motivation I got from Mr. Dr.
Abdul Bari Khan. He saw dream to provide health care services free to everyone and started
working on that dream. Today he is doing so well and also starving to do more. As per him he is
doing this just to Please God all mighty. That approach of Mr. Dr. Abdul Bari Khan give me
motivation to start working not just betterment of myself but also for others.

Second learning which I learned is that if God all mighty give you any kind of power don’t
think yourself that much big which can’t you be. Always be humble, soft-spoken and down to
earth, because in this world nothing is permanent. This also remind me the famous saying.

“After every night there is a morning & after every morning there will a night”

Furthermore I have also leaned those things which are very much use full not for only leader but
also for every individual. Like communicational skills, open minded, open hearted, energetic, risk
taker, decision maker, adoptive, creative, serving, and visionary. These are the most basic and
important thing for everyone, which can make you good leader for other and on same time for
yourself also.

Leader are the person how set example for group of people and also for nation. Also their
whole life straggle should be like an open book, so everyone can learnt from their good practice
and also know how to react in worse situation. Because a good leader is a good observer as well,
that give leader good advantages.

An experience/learning I had related to our topic Leadership after meeting HR Manager of Indus
Hospital, it was my first time I had a meeting discussion related to our project report, we were not
that much satisfied because our target was to meet Dr. Abdul Bari Khan but unfortunately we
couldn't matched with their schedule.

So generally one thing I came to know in the discussion on Boss and Leader, to be honest when
we are doing our bachelors or masters we are taught to be a leader not a boss but deep down
everyone wants to be a person who can command but we have to choose ourselves it's better to be
a leader than a boss and I came to know that if a person is responsible, valuing employee
perspectives and most importantly a good human he can be a great boss.

In short, in our professional one should spend most of their time as a leader but at times we have
to be a boss also.

Leadership is a blend of many things as I have seen and learnt so far. It is not only making other
people follow your instructions and act accordingly but to make them realize the importance of
those objectives and motivate and help them in a way that encourages them to achieve those
objectives. Leadership is basically working in a team where understanding the team members,
their strengths, weaknesses, their problems and concerns is very important and making a strong
relationship within the team members. A great leader helps his team members in uncertain
situations and help them achieve the goals in a creative way. A leader also works for a continuous
improvement that not only achieve the targets efficiently but also helps the people in the team in
improving their skills and building their career. So a leadership cannot be defined in a single
sentence as there are many great concepts inside this single word “Leadership”.

The interview that was conducted with HR manager of Indus Muhammad Ali Zia on 2nd of July
was a life learning experience for me he thoroughly answer the question in a very efficient way.
Firstly he mention in his interview that when I was free in office I used to read books in my spare
time and advise my team members to read the books as well
I asked from Mr. Ali Zia when you get free what do you do. He just replied that whenever he gets
free reads books for gaining knowledge and tell all employees to get used to it. Secondly he tensely
mentioned that it's very hard decision to fire someone from job. Sometimes when we need to talk
on some chronic issues so we go for dinner and discuss all the issues because everybody is leader
in their own way.

As an Individual, the interview that was on conducted on 2nd of July 2019 with HR Manager of
Indus Hospital on the topic of “Leadership” was a life learning experience regarding how to adapt
the leadership qualities in the Manager. The list of 30 questions in the questionnaire which was
answered in very smooth and calm manner which reflects how he was perform his daily routine
activities with their subordinates in the workplace which also portrays his qualities of a good boss
and an effective leader as well. During the interview, he reflects the overall vision of Dr. Abdul
Bari and how he was successful in establish his hospital with the help of his friends in Pakistan
and abroad. He also highlights that how to handle the pressure when things were not in his hand
and also adapted the whistle blow policy which indicate how to deal with angry employees and
present the positive outcome in order to create a win-win situation for both parties. He also adapts
the participative style of leadership that involves all team members in terms of identifying short
term goals and developing strategy and procedures to achieve the goals. He also mention that he
was keep motivating their team members in order to execute daily task in an efficient way and also
resolve the conflict among the employees which is an important quality of a leader. He also
describe the flow of communication between the inter departmental and with local campuses which
help to reduce the communication gap because the hospital adapted “Centralized Approach” , this
also helps him to become an effective communicator which another essential tool of leadership .
He always conduct a session with their group members in order to confirm the goals of an
organization was achieved and if there was a deviation in the plan , necessary action would be
taken which also portray the qualities of a good leader in an organization. He also mention that if
there was a requirement of any change in policy in an organization, it was appropriate to first
applicable to himself and if it works to become a positive outcome for their employees it should
be implemented across an organization which is an example of a good leadership quality. Overall,
the discussion with HR manager of Indus Hospital was a gainful insight for me as a whole because
he suggested that if an individual adopted these leadership qualities which is helpful to become an
effective manager in the future.
