Why MBA?

Managing people and a whole company needs managerial and interpersonal skills only an MBA
can show.
I had an inclination towards MBA right from my college days, although as typical Indian family
decided to opt for Engineering as Engineering or medical seemed the only to respectable degrees
after college. We had a financially weak period since my 10th and so the idea of getting job
quickly was also a factor. I had the thought of doing job after graduation to gain financial
independence at least to some extent, get accustomed to corporate field. So now, here I am after
experiencing the sales as well as R&D part of lubricants business in BPCL.

Career plan? Or 10 years from now?

Although I had the opportunity to work in the sales and marketing division, working with my
colleagues made me realize that what they have after 15-20 years of experience is not where in
want to be. To understand the back end side of the business, I opted for R&D after 1 and half
years of sales.
The working culture in PSU is different. Here, in every 3-5 years, you will be transferred,
sometimes even to completely different roles. Although, opportunity to learn various aspects is a
good part here, but in-depth knowledge is not possible. The slow processing of work makes it
difficult to implement ideas and achieve results. The frequent transfers of top level management
makes it difficult to even proceed objectively.
The growth here is linear although respectable but after 10-15 years, I prefer to be in a position
of financial independence along with being the master of the segment that I am working in.

Questions to ask to interview panel-
1. Can you provide an example of any student who had a similar background to mine and
like what industry has he gone to?
2. If you could give me one piece of advice as a student at this b-school, what would it be?

Also financially, the jump start that you receive as a fresher is great but as you progress, the
growth becomes stagnant. It’s heartbreaking to see that your 5 years senior is earning almost
equivalent to you.
So the fear of getting stuck in so called “secure job” prompted me to act early.
