Proposal
I am producing a short film for the ‘BeCreative’ film festival. The deadline for the completion of the
production is 28th November, so that it can be submitted into the festival. Any later and it’ll will
surpass the deadline.

I have chosen to create a short film. This is because I have a lot of practice in doing these, and did
one for my final major project in my first year. This experience in doing it has allowed me to improve
my camera skills and narrative telling to convey the plot. From choosing to do a short film, it will
allow me to show off where I have improved and will allow me the best chance of the production
turning out how I intended to because I have had practice. Furthermore, a short film allows me to
show off my creative skills because the story line is open to any change and can become anything I
want it to be.

For my productions I have chosen to make my target audience for 25 - 40 year old's as I think it will
allow me to make it more sophisticated that for the bracket of 5 - 12 year old's and will allow me to
use my camerawork and editing to convey ideas and feelings that would not be possible for the
young audience as they wouldn't pick up on it or understand it. Furthermore, the bracket of 25 - 40
year old's will allow me to have a wider range of options of what I could create and how creative I
can be with the narrative, camerawork and use of editing to convey the story and to create a link
between the audience and the production through relatable experience on understandable
situations. Before this, I conducted some research on my audience to find out more about them and
their view on my production idea. This would then allow me to better suit my production to my
target audience to meet the brief more successfully. From the research I found out that for my short
film my target audience like the idea of having the main character being shown to be going to work
and going about his day because it makes it easily relatable for them and allows them to understand
the character easily. Furthermore from the completion of a focus group I found out that by having
the ‘evil’ character relate to their childhood gives it a nostalgic feel and makes it creepier for them.
E.g. clowns remind them of films such as ‘IT’ and it takes them back to their childhood fear of clowns
and when they went to kid’s parties with them.

After conducting research on my target audience, this is my planned idea for the short film:

It starts with a guy getting up out of bed and getting ready for work, with short montage with shots
of him hitting alarm, then pouring cereal into bowl etc... He then goes out to work and when he gets
back there is ‘something/someone’ in the house, but he doesn’t know they are there. As he moved
about the house we as the audience see the ‘villain’ in the shot, but the character doesn’t, and as he
turns and we think he will encounter him, the camera pans across and the ‘villain’ is gone. This then
happens regularly as he goes about his evening. As he does so we see door slowly open and noises
around the house which he dismisses, but we know that it is the ‘villain’. He then goes upstairs and
gets ready for bed we see the ‘villain’ in the mirror of the bathroom, a lot closer to the character
than at the start as over time he gets closer. The character then gets into bed and reaches to turn
out his light, as he does, and the light flickers we see the ‘villain’s’ head slowly come up from the
other side of the bed.

Also, from my research I found out that my target audience watch short films mostly on YouTube.
This then suggests to me that it would be the best place to upload mine, because it is free to use so
anyone can view it, and because it is the most common platform my target audience use to watch
similar content. Furthermore, I will upload it to Facebook. This is because it is widely used by my
target audience who take up more than 32% of the global monthly active users on Facebook.
