Teachers: Emma Subject: Characterization

Common Core State Standards:

 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course
of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
Objective (Explicit):
 Students will be able to analyze how characters develop the theme by identifying personality traits portrayed in
a certain character.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
 Students will take the enneagram personality test and research their type.
 Identify a character they believe has the same personality as them.
 Provide textual evidence for the 2 examples given and explain how their actions related to their personality advance the
theme.

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

 I will review past learning by using vocabulary the students already know such as characterization and theme.
 Students must be able to identify characters in a story and relate their actions to the theme of the story.
 Students will be relating a character from a book to themselves by utilizing a personality test and it will make it more relatable
and engaging,

Key vocabulary: Characterization, theme, plot Materials: Phone/laptop, book, pencil, paper
Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
 Ask students if they have ever taken a personality test in the past.
 Play a fun personality game with the whole class to get them engaged.
 What do you know about different personality types?

Instructional Input

 I will know if the students understand by seeing if

their personality can be related to the character
they chose.
 I will use my opening activity to model what
behavior is expected from them during this
assignment.

Co-Teaching Strategy
 Which co-teaching approach will you use to maximize student achievement? I will maybe talk to their past English
teachers about what they should know about theme and characterization.

Differentiation Strategy
 If some students struggle with this assignment I would be willing to help narrow it down for them by only requiring them
one quote. I would even be willing to provide them with the character and just have them find the quotes to show me
why.
 If students need an extra challenge they can always add more quotes for evidence or do the assignment for 2
characters instead of one.
