Time The course of the lesson
2 min 1. Greeting and introduction: the aim of the lesson
3 min 1. Warm-up: Revising hats and questions matching quiz.
3 min 2. Homework: discuss the list of 5 successful people you have made in
pairs.
1 min 3. Preparation for the group work. To explore the idea that success is
relative. “One person’s success is another person’s failure” I write this
on the board and ask students to discuss it without introduction or
preparation.
3 min 4. Putting students into groups and assigning roles (Worksheet with 4
people). Each of them has a reason to believe him/herself successful.
6 min 5. To discuss each character “wearing” different hats for a limited time-
take notes on a piece of paper. Who they think the most successful
people are and why.
4 min 6. To regroup characters for a hot air balloon journey. A role play
representing a successful character.
4 min 7. Characters are in a troubled hot air balloon that must lose some weight
to avoid crashing. I.e. one passenger. Each person must argue their
case, why they should not be ‘thrown out’. Tell them to debate for their
lives. Why are they important, why should they stay in the balloon?
5 min 8. To present a group statement about each person pointing out 2-3
reasons.
4 min 9. To evaluate each choice and vote for the best one.
2 min 10. Evaluation / Assessment:
Students will be evaluated based on participation in the opening exercise,
thoughtful contribution to class work, and detailed exploration of the effects of
Success and Fame through the additional points:
Three points: active participation in class discussion; insightful and mature
when working in a group; clear, thorough presentation created with several
details.
Two points: average participation in class discussion; average interest and
participation when working in a group; presentation created with some details.
One point: little participation in class discussion; difficulty working in a group;
incomplete presentation created with few or no details.
