Character Traits

Learning Target I will use specific vocabulary to describe common character traits.

I  Connect Act out being silly and goofy. Walk around the room laughing at
DO things, make silly faces, try to make the kids laugh.

Teach Students will be on the carpet area as I do the connection. Then I will
ask students to talk to each other to guess how I am acting. I will tell
them that what I am acting out is a character trait. Then I will explain
that a trait is part of a person’s behavior and actions that make up their
personality. That we can tell what a person is like (their personality)
by things that people act and say.

Next, I will share an anchor chart with children that name some of the
common character traits. (kind, funny, rude, brave, selfish, smart,
funny, shy, helpful, lazy, hard working, thoughtful)

WE  Active As a group we will play character trait charades. Students will get a
DO Engagement & chance to act out different common character traits using words and
Guided Practice actions. The rest of the class will “guess” what character trait the
student is portraying and then they will also tell why (give evidence)
On day one, I will work with the students to help them label the traits
in the “charades”.

YOU Group or On day two, students will do this part without the teacher's help. They
DO Independent will work together to figure out the portrayed character trait.
Practice

Share Student groups will share with the class a character they have read and
what trait they have along with how they know.

Assess & I will listen and observe students as they participate in charades. Also,
Consider when students are sharing, I will see if they can transfer the learning to
a character in a book. If students are still developing, I will continue
teaching these words in small groups.
Rationale:

I chose this learning target because it goes along with the comprehension lesson on
character traits. This is a necessary first step because students will not be able to
identify character traits if they do not have the vocabulary to do so. This lesson will
support students in being able to articulate different traits characters may have in
order to discuss a character's personality based on their actions and their words.
