Averrhoa Bilimbi is a nutrition-packed, starchy fruit that grows mostly on the trunk of tall trees.
It is a good source of VitaminC.Otherthanthe vitamins and minerals, the fruit also contains
offibre, ash, protein and moisture aswellas minerals (Kumar et al., 2013). The mature fruits can be
eaten in natura or processed into jams and jellies. Medicinal uses are attributed to bilimbi, which
include substances against cough, mumps, rheumatism, pimples and scurvy. The fruit juice has
high levels of oxalic acid, and therefore may be used to remove iron-rust stains from clothes and
to impart shine to brassware (Corrêa, 1926; Joseph & Mendonca, 1989, Lennox & Ragoonath,
1990; Wong & Wong, 1995). Oxalic acid has been determined as the principal acid in the
carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) and the bilimbi (A. bilimbi L.). While quantitative levels
have been reported for carambola, oxalic acid has only been reported qualitatively for bilimbi
(Joseph and Mendonca, 1989). To look into the effect of repeated administration of an ethanolic
extract of Averrhoa bilimbi (ABe) leaves, diabetic rats were treated with vehicle (distilled water),
ABe (125 mg kg−1) or metformin (500 mg kg−1) twice a day for 2 weeks. Like metformin, ABe
significantly lowered blood glucose by 50% and blood triglyceride by 130% when compared
with the vehicle. ABe also increased the HDL-cholesterol concentrations by 60% compared with
the vehicle. ABe thus notably increased the anti-atherogenic index and HDL-cholesterol/total
cholesterol ratio. However, like metformin, ABe did not affect total cholesterol and LDL-
cholesterol concentrations, but notably reduced the kidney lipid peroxidation level. These data
show that ABe has hypoglycemic, hypotriglyceridemic, anti-lipid peroxidative and anti-
atherogenic properties in STZ-diabetic rats (Pushparaj et al., 2000).
