CBSE TEST PAPER-02

CLASS - XII CHEMISTRY (The d– & f- block elements)

[ANSWER]

Topic:- potassium dichromate , potassium permanganate

Ans. 1 Potassium dichromate → chromite ore (FeCr2O4) Potassium Permanganate → MnO2

pyrolusite.

Ans. 2 Preparation of potassium dichromate takes place in three steps.

Step 1 : Fusion of chromite ore with sodium or potassium carbonate in free

excess of air.
4 FeCr2O4 + 8 Na2CO3 + 7O2 → 8 Na2CrO4 + 2 Fe2O3 + 8CO2

Step 2 : Conversion of Sodium Chromate to Sodium Dichromate by acidifying it.

2 Na2CrO4 + 2 H + → Na 2 Cr2 O 7 +H 2 O + 2Na +

Step 3: Conversion of sodium dichromate to potassium dichromate by reaching

it with KCl.
Na2Cr2O7 + KCl → K 2Cr2O7 + NaCl

Ans.3 When a base is added to orange coloured potassium dichromate its colour changes
to yellow due to formation of potassium chromate.
Cr2O7 2 − + 2OH − → 2CrO4 2 − + H 2O

Ans 5. Potassium Permanganate is prepared in two steps:

Step 1: Fusion of MnO2 with KOH and oxidizing agent to give dark green K2MnO4.
2 MnO2 + 4 KOH + O2 → 2 K 2 MnO4 + 2 H 2O

Step 2: Disproportionation of manganate ions to give permanganate ions.

3MnO4 2− + 4 H + → 2 MnO4 − + MnO2 + 2 H 2O

Ans6. Uses of potassium permanganate –

(a) As an oxidizing agent.
(b) For bleaching of wool, cotton & silk.
(c) For decolourisation of oils.

Ans.7

Ans 8 1. 5Fe2+ + MnO4- + 8H+ → Mn2+ +4H2O + 5Fe3+

2. 5NO2- + 2MnO4- +6H+ → 2Mn2+ +5NO3- +3H2O
3. 2MnO4- +H2O + I- → 2MnO2 +2OH- +IO3-
4. 8MnO4- +3S2O3 2- +H2O → 8MnO2 + 6SO42- +2OH-
5. Cr2O72 + 14H+ + 6Fe2+ → 2Cr3+ + 6Fe3+ + 7H2O
6. Cr2O72- + Sn2 + 14H+ → Sn4+ + 2Cr3+ +7H2O
