Advantages/Disadvantages and checklist for case study

Advantages

● The primary benefit of the case study is that it allows a researcher to focus one or a
couple of situations that allows the researcher to find any hidden subtleties or
complexities lurking in the subject matter.
● A case study allows you to see all the finer details of the relationships between
details and the facts. It takes a whole account of the situation and uses specific
examples to highlight the researcher’s findings.
● Case studies allow you to use a wide range of research tools/methods, it is not
restricted to just x1 research method.
● Case studies works well when events have already occurred and been documented.

Disadvantages

● If there is ANY generalizations within the case study, there will be some criticism of
the case study (especially in academic circles).
● Case studies have been in the past unjustified for producing “SOFT DATA” and can
be criticized for not being more robust (especially in academic circles).
● Some technical findings might be hard to define if the researcher doesn’t have any
knowledge or expertise within that area.
● Getting access to certain areas that are important to the research can be challenging
for gathering information for you case study.

Case study checklist

● Is the research based on events that have already happened, and naturally occurred
[ ]
● Has the “CASE” for the case study been described and justified [ ]
● Has the case study identified the particular events that are important for the
examples that the researcher would want to use in his or hers final outcome/finding [
]
● Has the findings of the case study been compared with other events or other similar
case studies [ ]
● Is the case study concise, and describes in-depth all the variables, and the
relationships between the details and the facts [ ]
● Have ALL GENERALIZATION been kept to a minimum [ ]
● Has the researcher used “multiple research methods/tools” to obtain all the relevant
data required to construct a case study [ ]
