CASE STUDY
RESEARCH
Case study research is a qualitative research method that
involves an in-depth investigation of a particular case or
phenomenon. Case studies can be used to explore a wide range
of topics, such as the experiences of individuals or groups, the
implementation of programs or policies, or the causes and
consequences of events.
Characteristics of case study research :

• Intensive: Case study research involves an in-depth investigation of a single case or

phenomenon. This allows researchers to collect rich and detailed data, including
contextual information and the perspectives of multiple stakeholders.

• Contextual: Case study research is conducted in the natural setting of the case, which
allows researchers to understand the case in its full context. This is particularly important
for complex phenomena that cannot be easily studied in a laboratory or other controlled
environment.

• Qualitative: Case study research typically involves the collection and analysis of
qualitative data, such as interviews, observations, and documents. This allows
researchers to capture the rich and nuanced experiences of individuals and groups.

• Exploratory: Case study research is often used to explore new or underexplored

phenomena. This can lead to new insights and theories, as well as ideas for future
research.

• Flexible: Case study research is a relatively flexible research method. This means that
researchers can tailor the design and approach of the study to the specific case being
investigated.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CASE
STUDY RESEARCH

Advantages

• Case study research can provide in-depth insights

into complex phenomena and the experiences of
individuals and groups.

• Case study research can be used to explore a wide

range of topics, including new or underexplored
phenomena.

• Case study research is a relatively flexible research

method, which allows researchers to tailor the
design and approach of the study to the specific case
being investigated.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CASE
STUDY RESEARCH

Disadvantages

• Case study research can be time-consuming and

resource-intensive.

• The findings of one case study cannot be assumed to

apply to other cases.

• Case study research can be susceptible to bias, as the

researcher may develop a close relationship with the
case subject(s).
CONCLUSION
Overall, case study research is a valuable research method that can be used to gain
a deep understanding of a particular case or phenomenon. However, it is
important to be aware of the limitations of case study research when interpreting
and applying the findings.
