Production design is very important parts in film making. Production design can make big
difference between story telling by mouth and showing some scene without words. Sometimes you
can tell your audience so much more through production design about your story than words often
can. First of all, production design involve with lot of elements like location, sets, costumes, props,
matters, miniatures and so on. In production design, art director, prop master, scenic artist, makeup
artist, costume designer works to make a film successful. All of their collective goal is to make
concrete the director’s vision of what the film should physically look like in real or imagined
world. For example: Character is one of the important part in film. A room full of sports
memorabilia indicates a character is a sport’s fan. Audience can tell what kind of person in that
character based on the set design. Production design should keep the audience visually bound.
In order to understand how crucial production design is, this week I watched “The grand Budapest
hotel”. In the search for a hotel for the film, the production team discovered an abandoned
department store in the city, Production designer Stockhausen took this blank department store
and transformed it in to the interior of the hotel. The grand budapest hotel emphasizes how
production design is used to magnify a character’s personality. So, from above example we can
understand how production design impact on making a good film.

After 4 week, I am enjoying this course. I learn lot of thing about the film making. After studying
camera technique, production design, cinematography, now I try to analyze any film I watch. I try
to think different angle of making the video. Though I cannot give much time on this course
because of job, lab, and work-life balance. If this course is in class based then it would be more
participative. I will try to gather more knowledge about the film making.
