Hazaron Khwahishein Aisi is the one of the most beautiful poems by Ghalib that I have ever

read. Here it goes with translation. All thanks to The World's Largest Poetry Site Allpoetry.

Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi {A Thousand Desires Such}

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bohat niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle

Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?

Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle

Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?

Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle

Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin

Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle

Bharam khul jaaye zaalim! teri qaamat ki daraazi ka

Agar is tarahe par pech-o-kham ka pech-o-kham nikle

Magar likhvaaye koi usko khat, to hum se likhvaaye

Hui subaha, aur ghar se kaan par rakh kar qalam nikle

Hui is daur mein mansoob mujh se baada aashaami

Phir aaya voh zamaana, jo jahaan mein jaam-e-jaam nikle

Hui jin se tavaqqa khastagi ki daad paane ki

Voh ham se bhi zyaada khasta e tegh e sitam nikle

Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka

Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle

Zara kar jor seene par ki teer-e-pursitam niklejo

Wo nikle to dil nikle, jo dil nikle to dam nikle

Khuda ke waaste parda na kaabe se uthaa zaalim

Kaheen aisa na ho yaan bhi wahi kaafir sanam nikle

Kahaan maikhane ka darwaaza Ghalib aur kahaan vaaiz

Par itna jaantay hain kal voh jaata tha ke ham nikle

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle

Bohat niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle...

TRANSLATION-

Thousands of desires, each worth dying for...

many of them I have realized...yet I yearn for more...

Why should my killer (lover) be afraid? No one will hold her responsible
for the blood which will continuously flow through my eyes all my life

We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven,

With a more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live...

Oh tyrant, your true personality will be known to all

if the curls of my hair slip through my turban!

But if someone wants to write her a letter, they can ask me,
every morning I leave my house with my pen on my ear.

In that age, I turned to drinking (alcohol)

and then the time came when my entire world was occupied by alcohol

From whom I expected justice/praise for my weakness

turned out to be more injured with the same cruel sword

When in love, there is little difference between life and death

we live by looking at the infidel who we are willing to die for

Put some pressure on your heart to remove that cruel arrow,

for if the arrow comes out, so will your heart...and your life.

For god's sake, don't lift the cover off any secrets you tyrant
the infidel might turn out to be my lover!

The preacher and the bar's entrance are way apart

yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving!

thousands of desires, each worth dying for...

many of them I have realized...yet I yearn for more

These are my favorites from a Jagjeet Singh recital of 'Ghalib letters' :

1) Hum ne mohabaton ke nashe mein aa kar usey khuda bana daala,

Hosh tab aaya jab usne kaha ke khuda kisi ek ka nahi hota.

Translation :

I considered her my god, too drugged/blinded by my lover for her,

It was only then I realised I was blinded, when she quoted that god never belongs to just one.

2) Abhi mashroof hoon kaafi, kabhi fursat mein sochunga,

Ke tujhko yaad rakhne mein mai kya kya bhool jaata hoon.

Translation :

I'm too occupied to think, i'll think someday when I can spare sometime,
Whatever it is that i keep forgetting, so that i can remember you.

P.S. Sadly, it loses all it's charm after translation.

Bazeecha-e-atfaal hai duniya mere aage |

These lines by Ghalib have been stuck in my head since the first time I read them years ago.
They roughly translate to mean how the world is like a child's play area where he witnesses
drama/tricks being enacted out everyday. Found a nice link for more details (Ghalibs bazeecha-e-
atfal).

Here's Ghalib, the humanist for you.
" bas ki dushwaar hai har kaam ka aasaaN hona
aadmee ko bhee muyassar naheeN insaaN hona "
[ dushwaar = difficult, muyassar = possible ]

Depending on the interpretations of 'bas ki' the sher can have slightly varying meanings,
Possible Interpretations:

A lament
"We live in an age where everything seems such a task,
One cannot even afford to be human these days."

A declaratory statement
"While it is difficult for every task to be easy (achievable)
even men do not (always) succeed in becoming human"

I personally go with the surreal one :)

Here is one of my favorite poems by Mirza Ghalib, a Sufi poet who wrote Urdu and Persian
poetry in the early 1800's. This Urdu poem is called Heart It Is, Not a Brick or Stone and
translates from Dil Hee To Hai. Interestingly, Ghalib's poems were turned into Bollywood songs
and were the records my grandparents would play for my Mom. Links to some adaptations are
below the english translation of the poem.

I find these lines especially solid: The rules of life and bonds of sorrow/ In reality are the one
manifestation

Dil Hi To Hai (English Translation)

Heart it is, not a brick or stone
Why shouldn't it feel the pain?
Let none tyrannize this heart
Or I shall cry again and again
Neither the temple, nor the mosque
Nor on someone's door or porch
I await on the path where He will tread
Why others should compel me to go?
The illumined grace that lights up the heart
And glows like the midday sun
That Self that annihilates all sights
When then it hides in the mysterious net?
The amorous glance is the deadly dagger
And the arrows of emotions are fatal
Your image may be equally powerful
Why should it appear before you?
The rules of life and bonds of sorrow
In reality are the one manifestation
Before realizing the ultimate truth
How can then one attain liberation?
Love is laden with noble thoughts
Yet what remains is the carnal shame
Trust conscience the still little voice
Why do you want test the rival?
There the pride of modesty resides
Here dwells the social morality
How shall we meet, on which road
Why should he invite me to the abode?
True he is an atheist
Unfaithful and unchaste
Dear to who is faith and heart
Why should he then venture there?
Without the wretched 'Ghalib'
Has any activity come to a halt?
What then is the need to cry?
What then is the need to brood?

I like this excerpt from Ghalib's poetry (phir kuch is dil ko beqarari hai) -

Phir Usi Bewafa Pe Marte Hain

Phir Wahi Zindagi Hamari Hai
Bekhudi Besabab Nahi 'ghalib'
Kuch To Hai Jis Ki Pardadari Hai

Here is the complete poem with the interpretive translation -

Phir Kuch Is Dil Ko Beqarari Hai

Sina Zoya-e-zakhm-e-kari Hai

Phir Jigar Khodne Laga Nakhun

Amad-e-fasl-e-lalakari Hai

Qibla-e-maqsad-e-nigah-e-niyaz
Phir Wahi Parda-e-ammari Hai

Chashm-e-dallal-e-jins-e-ruswai
Dil Kharidar-e-zauq-e-khwari Hai

Wahi Sadrang Nala Farsai

Wahi Sadguna Ashqbari Hai

Dil Hawa-e-khiram-e-naz Se Phir

Mahshristan-e-beqarari Hai

Jalwa Phir Arz-e-naz Karta Hai

Roz-e-bazar-e-jansupari Hai

Phir Usi Bewafa Pe Marte Hain

Phir Wahi Zindagi Hamari Hai

Phir Khula Hai Dar-e-adalat-e-naz

Garm Bazar-e-faujdari Hai

Ho Raha Hai Jahan Mein Andher

Zulf Ki Phir Sarishtadari Hai

Phir Diya Para-e-jigar Ne Sawal

Ek Fariyad-o-ah-o-zari Hai

Phir Hue Hain Gawah-e-ishq Talab

Ashqbari Ka Hukmzari Hai

Dil-o-mizshgan Ka Jo Muqadma Tha

Aj Phir Us Ki Rubqari Hai
Bekhudi Besabab Nahi 'ghalib'
Kuch To Hai Jis Ki Pardadari Hai

Interpretive translation -

There’s a restlessness in this heart again,

This bosom seeks wounds afresh. [1]

The heart is ploughed through again,

Here comes the season of blossoms red. [2]

Dying for that betrayer again,

It’s my same old life, all over again.
This unconscious state – not without cause or reason, Ghalib
There’s something here that’s surely being veiled. [3]

[1] joyaa: seek / search for ; zakhm: wound

[2] jigar: literally, ‘liver’, but equivalent in English usage to ‘heart’ as the ‘seat of emotions’,
especially love.
aamad: Here comes / arrives; fasl: season / harvest; laala: flowers, typically red.
[3] bekhudi: literally, ‘detachment from self’. Has many shades of meaning, such as an
unconscious / careless / forgetful / oblivious state. Also refers to being inebriated, or even being
spiritually connected with the divine. Thus carries both ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ connotations,
depending on the context and interpretation.
besabab: without cause / reason / motive
pardadaari: literally, the act of veiling.

Zahid sharab peene de masjid mein beth kar,

Yaa woh jagha bata jahan Khuda nahin..

Masjid khuda ka ghar hai, peeney ki jagha nahin,

Kaafir ke dil mein ja, Wahan khudaa nahin..
(Allama Iqbal)

Kaafir ke dil se aya hon mein yeh dekh kar,

Khuda maujood hai wahan, Par usey pata nahin..

Didn't find these so would like to add them:
Tha zindagi mein marg ka khatka laaga hua,
Udne se pesh-tar bhi mera rang zard tha.
Translation: There is always suspicion of death in live, hence i was pale before taking the
flight(of life).

A brilliant Ghazal writen by Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (broken into 4 couplets and
explained)

aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak

kaun jiitaa hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak
Translation:
The sighs of love take a lifetime to realize
Who may live that long to see you untie the knots of your tresses?

Between the lines:

Oh!, the incredible sadness that is so intertwined with unrequited love. When the deepest
sigh in your heart for the person you love is met with a casual nonchalance, almost a child
like ignorance of the thing (or being, or God) you love so much, is just so unbearable. How
does one describe it? Zulf ke sar hone tak – Ghalib’s analogy is again characteristic razor
sharp. You were untying the knots in your tresses, while I lived a lifetime of unrequited
love! You beautiful thing, so child like in your ignorance of my state of despair, so aloof of
the deepest sighs of my heart, the one that beats for you, and will for a whole lifetime. I
may resign, but I cannot quit and I cannot live life any other way, but just see you biding
your time, with thoughts that are not of me, with a heart that might never once beat for
me, my sighs left unrealized, unheard, dying with me as I take my final breath.

aashiqi sabr talab aur tamanna betaab

dil ka kya rang karoon khoon-e-jigar hone tak
Translation:
Love demands patience and yearning restless
What colour shall my heart be, when its bleeds.

Between the lines:

Patient I have to be, but this heart is restless in its yearning. How do I survive this long
and painful journey, this hopeless existence? How do I placate my heart, ask it to go on?
And for what? – knowing that it’s only my eventual destruction that looms in the horizon.
How do I live through this madness, torn apart between my restless yearning and the need
to go on?

humne maana ke tagaaful na karoge lekin

khaak ho jayenge hum, tumko khabar hone tak
Translation:
Though I believe you may not ignore me, but
I will turn into ashes by the time you understand the plight

Between the lines:

When will you notice the plight, the pulsating heart, the yearning, the burning? When will
you know it’s you? You may not ignore, may not be apathetic, but will you ever
understand you are the one? I will perhaps destruct by the time you understand, turn into
ashes, my love unfulfilled, my last sigh unheard, like all the others before it.

gham-e-hasti ka asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaz

shamma har rang mein jalti hai sahar hone tak
Translation:
O Asad!, There is no remedy for the anguish of living save death
The candle has to burn till morning no matter what

Between the lines:

So I have to go on burning, I tell myself, till the very end, since there is no other way.
There is nothing that can soothe this anguish of living, save my destruction. This will only
end one way. But till then, I will have to endure the pain, keep my sighs to myself, keep
burning, without hope of you even passing a glance on the side, noticing my existence, my
pain, in your selfish childlike ignorance, untouched by my love.

Now listen to Late Jagjit Singh relive this beautiful ghazal in his own melody.

Here are a few shers by Ghalib (some part of ghazals) that I've liked:

1. Bazeecha-e-atfal hai duniya mere aage,

Hota hai shab-o-roz tamasha mere aage.
Meaning:
For me, the world is a child's playground,
Day in and day out, I see this act played before me!

From the same ghazal:

2. Go hath ko jumbish nahin ankhon men to dum hai,
Rehne do abhi sagar-o-meena mere aage.
Meaning:
Though my hands shake (due to old age), my eyes are strong,
Let the goblet and bottle (wine) be here, before me!

3. Nuktaa chi hai gam-e-dil, ke sunaye na bane,

Kya baat banaye wahan, jahan baat banaye na banaye,
.
Ghair firta hai liye yoon tere khat ko ki agar,
Koi pooche ki yeh kya hai to chipaaye na bane.
.
Ishq par zorr nahi hai yeh woh attissh Ghalib,
Jo lagaye na lagaye bhujhaye na bane ...

Meaning:
She is such a nit-picker, that I cannot narrate the grief of my heart to her,
Of what use would be talking there, when you can't make a point,
.
I wander around with your letter that if someone asks,
what it is, I cannot just hide it.
.
There is no control over love, Ghalib, it is that flame,
which cannot be forcefully lit, and cannot be extinguished too

4. Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum ke tu kya hai,

Tum hi kaho, ke ye andaaz-e-guftgu kya hai?
Ragon me daudte firne ke hum nahi kayal,
Jab aankh se hi na tapka to fir lahoo kya hai?
Meaning:
For each statement, you respond, 'What are you?'
Tell me what is this (arrogant) style of speech?
I am not a believer of running around in veins,
If it didn't drip from the eye, then what is that blood?

5. Nikalna khuld se Adam ka sunte aaye hai lekin,

Bahut be-aabroo hokar tere kooche se hum nikle.
Meaning:
I've been hearing of Adam leaving Paradise (the Garden of Eden),
But I've been even more embarrassed when I was thrown out of your street/lane.

6. Fir kuch is dil ko beqaraari hai,

Seena zoya-e-zakhm-e-kaari hai.
Meaning:
Yet again, this heart has a strange restlessness,
Chest (meaning heart perhaps) is in search of a deep wound).

Zoya: Searcher, Zakhm-e-kaari deep wound.

PS:
There is an album in which Gulzar narrates the story with Jagjit Singh singing in the background.
Name of the Album: Tera bayaan Ghalib.
It is fairly based on the TV movie by Gulzar on Ghalib.
It is a nice album to possess.

Ya woh jaga bata jaha KHUDA nahi hai !!

The above couplet means ...Allow me to drink alcohol in the mosque , church...if you can't then
tell me the place where there is no God.

This implies that God is everywhere...he is not just confined to mosques , temples or
churches...So if I can drink alcohol anywhere else....then why not Mosque or churches

On of my favourite couplets from Ghalib:
"Na tha kuch to khuda tha, kuch na hota to khuda hota
Duboyaa mujh ko hone ne, na hota main to kya hota..."

In my little understanding the approximate translation could be (remember the beauty of any
deep poetry is that it can reveal a number of meanings to its listener; may be next time I
contemplate on it I get another glimpse!):

"When there was nothing (before the creation of the world), God existed, and even if nothing had
existed, God's existence would have continued...
I have been drowned by my personal/separate existence, if I had not existed nothing would have
mattered...?"

Any other interpretation is welcome...

chipak raha hai badan per lahu se pairahan
hamaaray jaib ko ab haajat e rafu kya hai

my clothes are caused , by oozing blood, to cling unto my frame

what need is there now for my vest to be darned anew?
jala hai jism jahaan, dil bhi jal gaya hoga!
kuredtay ho jo ab raakh, justju kya hai?

with my body consigned to flames, my heart too would have burnt

why do you rake ashes now, what is it you pursue?

ragon mein daurtay phirnay ke hum nahin qaail

jab aankh se hi na tapka, to phir lahu kya hai?

merely because it courses through the veins, I'm not convinced

if it drips not from one's eyes, blood cannot be held true

All the Ghazals of Mirza Ghalib are philosophical exemplars. Here is one of them. This Ghazal
is sung by Shri Jagjit Singh.

"Qaasid ke aate-aate khat ek aur likh rakhoon

Main jaanta hoon jo woh likhenge jawaab mein"
[qaasid = messenger (who brings a khat = letter)]

Kab se hoon, kya bataaun Jahaan-e-kharab mein

Shab haaye hijr ko bhi rakhoon gar hisaab mein

[jahaan-e-kharab = world of problems, shab = night + hijr = separation --> nights of separation]

Mujh tak kab unki bazm mein aata tha daur-e-jaam

Saaqi ne kuch mila na diya ho sharaab mein

[bazm = gathering, jaam = drink,saaqee = bartender]

Taa phir na intezaar mein neend aaye umra bhar

aane ka ahad kar gaye, aaye jo khwaab mein
[taa = so that, ahad = promise, khwaab = dream,So I could not sleep again for the rest of my
life,Once they promised me in my sleep that they will come.]

Gaalib chhuti sharaab par abh bhie kabhi kabhi

Peeta hoon roz-e-abr-o-shab-e-maahtaab mein

Ghalib: A reference to the poet, Mirza Ghalib

Chhuti: Exemption, Leaving, License, Release, Relinquishment
Roz: (Every) Day
Abr: Cloud
Roz-e-Abr: Cloudy Days
Shab: Night
Maahataab: Moon
Shab-e-Mahataab: Moonlit nights

In Devanagri Script

On Ghalib's love for mangoes: The fruit that sent Mirza Ghalib into raptures

mujhse poochho, tumheñ khabar kya hai

aam ke aage neyshakar kya hai...
ya ye hoga ke fart-e rafa’at se
baagh-baanoñ ne baagh-e jannat se
angabeeñ ke, ba hukm-e rabb-in-naas
bhar ke bheje haiñ sar-ba-mohr gilaas
"ask me! for what do you know?
a mango is far sweeter than sugarcane...
perhaps from the great heights above
the gardeners of heaven’s orchards
have sent, by the order of God
wine filled in sealed glasses"

My favourite one is

Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka

Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle

Ghalib's name today has become synonymous to Urdu Poetry. He says,

Hain aur bhi duniya mein sukhanvar bahut achche

Kehte hain ke Ghalib' Ka hai andaz-e-bayaan aur

There are other poets in the world, very good, well known

But Ghalib', they say,has a way of expression all of his own

Here is another couplet from the same Gahzal of Ghalib

Ya rab wo na samjhe hain,na samjhenge meri baat

De aur dil unko,Jo na de mujhko zaban aur

She has neither understood, O God,nor will she understand, What I say
If not another tongue to me,give her another heart,I pray

The beauty of Ghalib's poetry is that Ghalib writes very simple, very elegant but the couplets
leave a deep impact on the reader..
This Ghazal is aa good example...
Dil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai

O my fond heart, what is that ails you

What's the cure for this pain, what I can possibly do

Hum hain mushtaaq,aur wo bezaar

Ya Ilahi, ye maajra kya hai

She is exasperated and I am so keen

O lord, what might it all mean

Haan bhala kar,Tera bhala hoga

Aur darwesh ki sada kya hai

Do good, and you wil have good too,

What else can a mendicant say for you

Main ne mana ke kuch nahin Ghalib',

Muft hath aaye to bura kya hai

I know its nothing much ,this wine

But if you get it free,Ghalib', its fine

True to say Ghalib' is "Ghalib" on every poet. The word Ghalib (Urdu-‫ )غالب‬literally in English
means-

 Mighty
 Dominant

Ghalib' has chosen the best pen name for him.(Before 'Ghalib' he used to write ghazals with
'Asad' as his takhallus (Urdu-‫ )تخلص‬i.e. pen name.)

As most of the gems have been illustrated by fellow quorans, i hope you like this one...

Ek din hamare annsoon humse pooch baithe...

Humey roz -roz kyon bulate ho,
Humne kaha, hum yaad to unhe karte hain...
Tum kyon chale aate ho.
Translation:
My tears asked me one day...
Why do you call me every day,
I replied, I remember my love...
Why do you turn up everyday!!!

Ghalib's whole poetry is awesome. Each and every couplet he wrote holds much more deeper
multi faceted meaning than meets the eye and you will realize it time and again in various
situations in life that how these couplets hold true in so many different situations. people have
already told so many beautiful lines. So I am not gonno add to it. However let me humbly correct
few folks that there are no 4 liners, there are always 2 liners in ghazals. Always! What you are
writting 4 liners are actually 2 couplets and while reciting them you have to recite them as 2
couplets only and give pause after each one.
Also, I doubt that couplets -
1.
Peene de masjid mein baithkar ghalib,
ya wo jagah bata jaha khuda nahi hai ..
2. Hathon ki lakeero pe mat ja ghalib,
naseeb unke bhi hote hai jinke haath nahi hote
are not by ghalib. Only Ghalib's name is taken to popularize it. These doesn't feel like his
writing. Can somebody tell for sure that these indeed Ghalib's?
Regards,
Gaurav

fascination of Urdu poetry and Ghalib has got me here-

This Ghazal by Ghalib is beautiful-

Husn-e-maah garche ba-hangaam-e-kamaal achchaa hai

Us-se mera maah-e-kursheed jamaal achcha hai

Bosa dete nahin aur dil pe hai har lehzaa nigaah

Jee mein kehte hain ki muft haath aaye to maal achcha hai

Aur bazaar se le aaye agar toot gayaa

Saagar-e-Jam se mera jaam-e-sifaal achcha hai

Betalab dein to mazaa usme sivaa milta hai

Woh gadaa jis mein na ho khu-e-sawaal achcha hai

Unke dekhe se jo aati hai munh par raunaq

Woh samajhte hain ki beemaar ka haal achcha hai

Dekhiye paate hain ushshaaq buton se kya faiz

Ek Barheman ne kahaa hai yeh saal achcha hai

Hamsukhan teshe ne Farhad ko Shireen se kiya

Jis tarah kaa bhi kisi mein ho kamaal achcha hai

Qatraa dariyaa mein jo mil jaayen to dariyaa ho jaaye

Kaam achcha hai jo jiska ma’aal achcha hai

Khizr Sultaan ko rakhkhe khaaliq-e-akbar sar sabz

Shah ke baag mein yeh tazaa nihaal achcha hai

Hum ko maaloom hai jannat ki haqeeqat, lekin

Dil ko khush rakhne ko Ghaalib yeh khayaal achcha hai

Almost all of the answers include (90%) couplets which are mis-contributed to Ghalib by SMS
websites and cheap poetry forums. None of them are by Ghalib. Please read Ghalib from an
authentic source like Urdu Poetry, Urdu Shayari of Famous Poets - Rekhta.
For starters, I'll write a few of his most famous and my favorite (and easy) couplets.

MehrbaaN hoke bula lo mujhe chaaho jis waqt

maiN gayaa waqt nahiN huN k phir aa bhi na sakuN

zahr milta hi nahiN mujhko sitamgar warna

kya qasam hai tere milne ki k kha bhi na sakuN

Ye na thi hamaari qismat k visaal-e-yaar hota

agar aur jeete rahte yahi intizaar hota

tere waade par jiye to ham to ye jaan jhuut jaana

k Khushi se mar na jaate agar aitibaar hota

tumheN kya kahuN k kya hai shab-e-gham buri bala hai

mujhe kya bura tha marna agar ek baar hota

*
Koi ummiid bar nahiN aati
koi suurat nazar nahiN aati

Aage aati thi haal-e-dil pe hansi

ab kisi baat par nahiN aati

Dil Hi To Hai Na Sang-o-Khist
Dard Se Bhar Na Aaye Kyon?
Royenge Hum Hazaar Baar
Koi Hamein Sataye Kyon?

It’s only a (my) heart, not a stone or brick,

Why should it not be overcome with pain?
I will cry a thousand times,
Why should one torment(stop) me?

Dil Hi to Hai: It's my heart, my sorrow - Let me cry a thousand times over (Ghalib, who else!)

The same is sung by Jagjit Singh. Lovely poertry and lovely voice!

Yeh masail-e-tasawwuf, ye tera bayaan ghalib. Hum tuje wali samajte jo na badhakhwar hota.

Translation/Meaning

1) Ghalib compares human life to a drop of water. He says that when the river strikes its shore,
the water droplet gets absorbed by the sand and it completes its life cycle and is happy about it.
In the same way humans completes their life cycle and become one with the maker.

2) Here, ghalib asks god that dude if you punish me for my sins then you should compliment me
for the deeds that I thought of performing, but never put them in action.

3)Ghalib talks about love in this "sher". He asks his heart about the changes he is feeling and
asks him to tell a remedy.
4)Ghalib use to drink a lot and at that time it was close to sin. Moreover, muslims are not
allowed to drink as per Quran. He said that if he was not a drunkard then people would have
taken him seriously because of his intellect and knowledge. They would have called him "wali",
but this is not the case now:P:).

There are plenty & all have deep meaning, yet one of my favourite is
"Udne de in parindoo ko, azad fiza me ae Ghalib ;
Jo tere apne honge, wo laut aayenge kisi roz"

In english it reads as
"Let the birds fly in the free skies
Those that genuinely are your own, will return back some day"

The 18th century poet means to say that do not cling on to various relations / friends for
those that truly love n understand you shall be back with you.

No hope comes my way
No visage shows itself to me

That death will come one day is definite

Then why does sleep evade me all night?

I used to laugh at the state of my heart

Now no one thing brings a smile

Though I know the reward of religious devotion

My attention does not settle in that direction

It is for these reasons that I am quiet

If not, would I not converse with you?

Why should I not remember you?

Even if you cannot hear my lament

You don’t see the anguish in my heart

O healer, the scent of my pain eludes you

I am now at that point

That even I don’t know myself

I die in the hope of dying

Death arrives and then never arrives

How will you face Mecca, Ghalib

When shame doesn’t come to you
