Smith is an student of Mechanical Department. He is now in second year. He is a very keen
student. He often spends his leisure time in the workshop or in the library. Now he is the
workshop. He is talking with Mr. John Andrew, an adviser for Mechanical Department. He likes
talking with him because he can practice his English.
Smith : Mr. Andrew are these tools called? (He is pointing at transfer at transfer)
Mr. Andrew : They are called transfer punches.
Smith : What are they used for?
Mr. Andrew : They are used for transferring the location of a hole from a pattern to
another workpiece.
Smith : I see.
Could you tell me how to use them?
Mr. Andrew : Sure …. Come here.
Smith : All right. (He comes close to Mr. Andrew)
Mr. Andrew : You can try it if you want.
Smith : Oh yes … thank you.
Mr. Andrew : Suppose you want to transfer the location of a hole from this pattern to this
plate.
Put the pattern on the plate.
Smith : Okay.
(He puts the pattern on the plate).
Mr. Andrew : Select the proper size diameter punch.
Smith : Okay … I think this one is the proper size.
(He takes a punch which has the same diameter with the hole in the pattern).
Mr. Andrew : Yes, That’s right.
Place the punch through the hole.
Smith : Like this?
Mr. Andrew : Yes …. Then strike the head with a hammer.
Smith : Okay (He strikes the head with a hammer)
After Smith strikes the head with the hammer.
Mr. Andrew : Now, look at the plate.
The center of the hole is transferred to the plate.
Smith : Oh yes … , thank you very much for your explanation.
Mr. Andrew : With pleasure.
