I. INTRODUCTION
Fire main system is one of safety system in ship. Fire fighting
system is a system that is used to treat, prevent and stop the
fire that occurred in the ship, either as a whole or by part. Fire
became one important consideration and can not be ignored,
because it involves the safety of crew, cargo and ship continuity
itself. Although the fire in the ship can not be predicted when it
happened, but all of the components and specifications have
been set up well in the classification and design standards &
there must be on the ship.

II. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of Fire Main System are:
a) Calculate the piping of fire main system
b) Calculate the pump of fire main system

V. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This system is a safety system on board. Fire fighting system is
a system that is used to treat, prevent and stop the fire that
occurred on the ship, either as a whole or by part. Fire became
one important consideration and can not be ignored, because it
involves the safety of crew, cargo and ship continuity itself.
Although the fire in the ship can not be predicted when it
happened, but all of the components and specifications have
been set up well in the classification and design standards and
there must be onboard the ship. Fire is an event the flame as a
result of the reaction between the material, the source of heat
and oxygen. In general, compounds and elements are expressed
as the fire triangle shape. The only way to prevent fires is to
eliminate or separating any of the three elements. This can be
done by:
1. Lowering the temperature below the combustion temperature removes hea
2. Lower levels of oxygen eliminate oxygen.
3. Tearing combustible materials removes material (if possible).

The fire main system is devided by two sub-systems, are:

a) Sea Water Fire Fighting System

Fire Fighting system is a major fire extinguishing system that

is on the ship. This system uses sea water as the
extinguishing of the fire. The sea water is pumped by the
main pump, which will then be directed to the hydrant. The
sea water used is taken through a sea chest that is on the
ship. There are several rules regarding the fire play systems,
such as the SOLAS Regulation 10. The rules are set up,
among others, about the pressure on Nozzel, the diameter of
the main pipe, emergency pump, long hoses, and so forth.

b) CO2 Fixed System

This is a fixed CO2 extinguishing system tools used to
enclosed spaces only. Its working principle is to remove the
oxygen in the room is on fire so that the fire will die. This
system is still wearing the pipeline and can not be altered or
be removable. There is a special room that is used to put the

CALCULATION DETAILS

1. Calculation of fire pump capacity

Based on ABS Part 4, Chapter 7, Section 3, 1.3.1 Total Capacity.
The fire pump capacity is:

Qfp = 4/3 x Q bilge pump

(Q bilge pump = 88.16 m3/h)
= 4/3 x 88,16
= 117.547 m3/h
= 0.033 m3/s

2. Calculation of fire main pipe

Based on ABS Part 4, Chapter 7, Section 3, 1.7.1 Fire Main
Diameter, here is the calculation of the fire main pipe:

Q = A x V = (π d2 / 4) v d = (( 4 x Q ) / ( π x v ))0.5
d = (( 4 x Q ) / ( π x v ))0,5 = (( 4 x 0.033) / (3.14 x 2))0.5
V = Flow Velocity = 0.1442 m
= 2.0 m/s = 144.213 mm

According to the calculation and ABS 2017, Chapter 6, Section

2, Table 4 Minimum Wall Thickness for Steel Pipes and refer to
ANSI, fire main pipe is using steel material with below
specifications:
Nominal diameter = 6
Outside diameter = 168.3mm = 6.63 inch
Inside diameter (dm= 149.3 mm = 5.878 inch
Schedule = 40
thickness = 9.5 mm = 0.374 inch

b. Head pressure
Based on ABS Part 4, Chapter 7, Section 3, 1.7.2 Fire Main
Pressure, so the head pressure calculation is:

Nozzle for pressure vessel > 600(P) = 0.27 N/mm²

(GT = 6725) = 270000 N/m²
Density sea water (ρ) = 1025 kg/m³
Gravity (g) = 9.81 m/s²

The fluid transfer is from sea chest tank to overboard. The

tank is located under the suction side, so head pressure
suction is zero, (in Pa = pgh, the value of h is 0), and at the
discharge side has minimum needed pressure of 0.27 N/mm²
and designated value is 0.27 N/mm², so head pressure in
discharge is 270000 N/m²

Hp = (Pdiscd - Psuct ) / ρg
= (270000 - 0) / (1025 x 9,81)
= 26.85 m

c. Head velocity
Difference speed between the suction side discharge. To
head velocity in the fluid velocity is assumed to discharge to
the suction side of the same: and there is no velocity
difference between the sides.

Hv = ( V2disch - V2suct ) / 2g
= 0 m

Based on each scenario, the lowest needed power is scenario 6
(220 kW). But considering the pump's frequency in using, ballast
pump is the most frequent pump to be used and other pump
systems is almost never to be used. The scenario 6 is the lowest
needed power, but it has a weakness, it has a bad redundancy
system. Therefor, the final designed general service pump
is the scenario 5 with 295 kW. It is in second place of the
lowest power used and also it has better redundancy system
than the scenario 6.
