Introduction:

 Bulking Means Increase in volume due to presence of surface moisture.

 The volume increases with increase in moisture content till a certain level then vol.
decreases .
 There is a thin layer of water around the sand grains which causes the bulking .

Objective:
To determine the moisture content at which bulking of sand occurs.

Principle :
Volume of flooded(inundated) sand is same as volume of sand when dry.

Apparatus:
Water , Cylindrical Container(250 ml) , metal / glass rod ( 6mm dia. ).

Material :
Sand sample to be tested, water.

Procedure :
- Take the soil sample to be tested n fill it in a cylindrical container upto 200 ml mark.
- Fill the cylinder with water and stir the sand with a clean rod.

- Observe the new level (y) of sand .

Calculation:
Bulking of sand = (V2 – V1 / V1)*100%

Sample No. Mass of Initial Water Volume of Final Bulking of

sand (gm) Volume of Content(%) water (ml) volume (V2) sand (%)
sample (V1)

1 500 309 1% 5 331 7.11

2 500 309 2% 10 368 19.1

3 500 309 3% 15 400 29.44

4 500 309 4% 20 380 22.97

5 500 309 5% 25 381 23.30

Conclusion:

 The maximum bulking of sand take place at moisture content is 29.44%

 Water content at which maximum bulking occure is 3%
