Structured questions
1 (a) (i) 24Na: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1
(ii) 5 orbitals
(iii) 3s1
(iv) 24
Na is an unstable radioisotope with a short half-life.
(b) (i) Fe2+: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d6
Fe3+: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5
(ii) Fe3+ ion is more stable because it has stable half-filled d orbitals.

Essay questions
1 (a) When sufficient energy is supplied to a hydrogen atom at ground state, the electron absorbs
energy and is excited to a higher energy level.
The electron is unstable in the excited state. As the electron drops to a lower energy level,
the excess energy is emitted in the form of radiation with a certain frequency, as given in
the equation:
∆E = hf (∆E = difference in energy, h = Plank’s constant, f = frequency)
The emitted energy is seen as a line in the spectrum.
(b) Lyman series involves the transition of electrons from higher energy levels n > = 2 to n = 1
Lyman series consists of discrete lines and falls in the uv region.
The spaces between the lines get closer toward higher frequencies.
(c) Electronic transition of Lyman series is from energy levels n = 2, 3 … to n = 1 while Balmer
series is from n = 3, 4 … to n = 2.
Lyman series falls in the uv region while Balmer series falls in the visible region.
The radiation from the Lyman series have higher energy than those of the Balmer series.
