Fall Term 2019-2020

Experiment 3
Transfer Function of Physical Systems using MATLAB
Reference Signal for Control Systems from Different Locations (DAC)

Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to learn to use MATLAB to: (1) generate polynomial, (2)
manipulate polynomials, (3) generate transfer functions, (4) manipulate transfer functions and (5)
perform partial-fraction expansion, (6) find Laplace transforms for time functions, (7) find time
functions from Laplace transforms, (8) create LTI transfer functions from symbolic transfer
functions, (9) perform solution of symbolic simultaneous equations. Moreover, students will
build a Digital-to-Analog circuit to generate a reference signal for control systems from different
locations.

Procedure:

1. Transfer Function of Physical Systems using MATLAB

2. Reference Signal for Control Systems from Different Locations (DAC)

Use a 4-bit counter to build a circuit that generates a reference signal for a control system from
different locations. Use a 555 Timer (NE 555) to generate a 1 Hz square signal that will be fed to
an up/down counter (74LS193) through push-buttons (from different locations), then to a DAC
(DAC0808) then to an amplifier (LM 741).
Report
According to the course syllabus, you must hand in a report for every laboratory session. The
deadline for the submission of the report is stated at the first page of the laboratory assignment
handouts. No late reports will be accepted.

The report should start with a cover page (containing the name of the course, the experiment
number, your name and ID number, the date and an abstract of the report), a table of contents
(with page numbers), Introduction, Theoretical Analysis, Experiment Procedures, Empirical
Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and a Reference page containing the datasheets of all
components used in the experiment.

Append the original empirical results you recorded during the laboratory experiment to the
report.

The report should comprise the solution of the questions on LabVIEW™; therefore, both the
front panel and the block diagram should be included in the report.

The report should include the simulation of some questions on MATLAB®; therefore, m-files,
equations, plots and graphs (labeled with headings, axes labels and scales, legends, grid, etc.),
and complete answers to all problems.

The report should be typed, printed, and stapled (no binding). The typeface you should use is
Times New Roman, size 12 (Headings should be 14 and Bold, Sub-Headings should be 12 and
Underline), and Font Color black. The paragraph alignment should be set to Justify. Line

spacing should be set to 1.5 Lines. All margins should be set to 1 inch. The MATLAB® codes
should be Courier New, size 10.
