Essay about Language

I was born and raised in a little village in Thulangar , Azad Kashmir , where most of the people speak Urdu
and Kashmiri. My father and mother’s first language is Urdu but they are also able to speak Kashmiri. Both
of them can also speak English, though with accents. However, my mother tongue is Urdu, which is the
main language that we use in our family. I am also capable of speaking Kashmiri is all because of my
grandparents (mother’s parents), as Kashmiri is their mother language. I have plenty of opportunities to
speak and practice my Kashmiri when I see my grandparents. For my language acquisition in Urdu just
similar to natural language acquisition in bilingual children, and I learned these languages in a natural
linguistic environment through imitation from parents and family members. Beside from these two
languages that I can speak fluently, I am also able to speak and write in English. I learned how to speak
and write in English when I first started to go to school, because every school in Pakistan requires teachers
to teach in English, and students to communicate in English.

I had my second language, English, first learning experience when I was seven years old. Because my
parents paid a lot of attention to my early education, they hired a private tutor for me to learn English on
the weekends. Three years later when I was in fourth grade, our elementary school offered the English
classes, and I begin to reject having tutor in weekend. I still remembered that my English teacher in my
elementary school spent a lot time to teach us the pronunciation, and some simple words and sentences,
such as “Hello! How are you? I am fine. Thank you!” When I entered middle school I learn English. Because
my favorite language is urdu.my favorite book is peer e Kamal and favorite poet is Allama Iqbal.
