Objective (Explicit):
• Students will identify the theme of the novel The Outsiders after outlining an objective summary of the
text.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
 Include a copy of the lesson assessment.
 Provide exemplar student responses with the level of detail you expect to see.
 Assign value to each portion of the response
Identify one theme from The Outsiders and write 3-5 sentences about how it relates to the book, providing one example as evidence

Students should already have knowledge about the elements of narrative plot. They should have also learned the definition of theme previously,
but they will practice applying it in this lesson.
Skills needed: understand definition of theme, plot diagraming, working in groups, writing a paragraph.
This objective is relative to students because they can apply the themes from the novel to their own lives. The characters in the novel struggle
with violence in their community, a problem that is also present in our community.
