Course Information and Student Learning Outcomes

Course Description:
MAT 172 Precalculus Trigonometry

Class 3 Lab/Shop 2 Credit 4

Minimum State Prerequisite(s): MAT 171 or appropriate placement measures

Minimum State Corequisite(s): None

This is the second of a two-course sequence designed to develop topics which are fundamental to
the study of Calculus. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of trigonometric functions in multiple
representations, right and oblique triangles, vectors, polar coordinates, conic sections, and
parametric equations. Upon completion, students will be able to select and use appropriate
models and techniques for finding solutions to trigonometry-related problems with and without
technology.

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Use the unit circle and right triangle definitions to evaluate and graph trigonometric
functions and their inverses, to derive trigonometric identities, and to simplify
trigonometric expressions
2. Use multiple methods to solve problems involving trigonometric equations, right
triangles, and oblique triangles
3. Demonstrate knowledge of vector definitions and perform vector operations.
4. Convert equations and graphs between rectangular and polar coordinate systems, and
apply to complex numbers
5. Use multiple representations to define, construct and analyze conic sections
6. Create, graph, and analyze parametric equations

Course Requirements
(Optional) Text:
Hardcover text - Dugopolski, Mark. Precalculus Functions and Graphs: Addison-Wesley, 2012.

Required Materials:
TI 83/84+ calculator and MyMathLab access code

The hardcover textbook is optional because there is an online version of the textbook in
MyMathLab.

Course-Specific Computer/Software Requirements:

At a minimum, students are required to have regular access to a computer running Windows 7 or
a higher version, access to broadband Internet service, current versions of Internet Explorer,
Firefox, and Google Chrome, and Microsoft Word. Students should also have up-to-date
antivirus software installed.

Email:
E-mail is an official means of communication from the College. You are required to use your
College e-mail address when requesting assistance or communicating with any college
personnel. It is your responsibility to check your DCCC e-mail address regularly. All
communication from your instructor about your course will be sent to your DCCC email.

Methods of Instruction and Evaluation

Methods of Instruction:
This course is a combination of lectures, labs and online supplements. Lectures are presented
using the SmartBoard and will be interactive with expected student participation.

All homework and tests for this course will be completed using the MyMathLab online
supplement, which also contains the e-textbook. A notebook grade will be given for completed
homework assignments. This notebook will be turned in before each test.

All announcements and course information such as the Course Gradebook will be found in
Moodle. Labs will be presented in a computer lab setting or take home version and specific
directions will be given on how to complete each lab. All lab documents will also be contained in
Moodle.

Assignment, Test Information, and Grading Policy:

Grading Policy

● Tests 40%
● Labs/Quizzes 20%
● Online Homework 20%
● Final Exam (cumulative) 20%
The Grading Scale

● A = 100 - 90
● B = 89 - 80
● C = 79 - 70
● D = 69 - 60
● F = 0 - 59

** A tentative schedule of tests will be posted online.

**Final averages are rounded up only if you have achieved 5 tenths of a point. Example: A 69.5
would be recorded as a C. However, a 69.4 would be recorded as a D.

Make-Up Policy:

TESTS -- There are NO make-up tests for any excuse. Students will have their lowest test grade
replaced by the final exam if that is beneficial to the student. If a student misses more than one
test, then they will receive a zero for each test missed after the first one.

LABS – You will have one week from the start date of each lab to have it completed excluding
the final lab. After this date there is no make-up.

ONLINE HOMEWORK -- If you miss an online homework due date, you may NOT make this
up for any reason.

Academic Integrity:
Faculty may impose the following Academic Penalties for academic dishonesty in the classroom
including, but not limited to, the following:

● Verbal Warning
● Written Warning
● Failing grade for the assignment involved
● Failing grade for the course
● Removal from the course

Please refer to the Academic Integrity Policy in the DCCC Policies and Information document
for further details.

Attendance
The College believes that in order for students to be academically successful in achieving their
educational goals, they must participate in all scheduled class sessions, laboratories, and clinical
meetings. Although the occasional absence may be unavoidable, students are responsible to
demonstrate their commitment to their educational goals by contacting their instructor to
determine if arrangements can be made to make up any missed work.
