Topic addressed

Farming (egg plant)

1.0 Brief background of the project

Farming is the act or process of working the ground planting seeds and growing edible plants.

During internship , I will focus on egg planting on a small scale with the help of primary two
learners , teachers and school administrators e.g head teacher and deputy head teacher.

Egg plants are also known as aubergine or brinjal and are warm weather vegetables. They require
high temperatures between 70 and 850 F ( 21 and 300 c)

Egg plants develop and hang from the branches of a plant that grows several fit in height.

Egg plant varieties differ in sizes , shape, colour , growth and maturity time.

Egg plant soil requirement.

Egg plants do well in fertile well drained and slightly acidic soils.

They should be high in organic matter for best growth and yield.

How to propagate egg plants

Egg plants are propagated by seed , it takes about 7-10 days for the seedlings to emerge.

Seedlings are hardened off carefully before transplanting by reducing temperature and water.

How to plant egg plants.

Set transplants at 18-24 inches apart in rows 30-36 inches apart .

Use row covers to protect plants with heavy fruits set.

Fertilize egg plants as they are heavy feeders but avoid high nitrogen fertilizers.
How to control pests and diseases.

To help reduce diseases donot plant egg plants in the same location more than once every 3-4
years.

How to harvest egg plants

Harvest egg plants 16-24 weeks after sowing when the skin of the fruit is shining and un
wrinkled.

Cut the fruit close to the stem but leaving about an inch of it attached.

1.1 Problem Statement

farming at shimoni demonstration School – Kira is important in a way that it supplements on

learners diet farming has gained popularity as it has provided both teachers, learners and non
teaching staff with food as well as source of income to teachers.’

However the teachers donot benefit as much as it would be expected of them, some of the
factors such as climate change , high costs of input , exploitation by casual labourers have
hindered teachers from keeping up with the farming practice hence the internship is aimed at
investigating the problems that affect farming in the school.
