English 2100

Writing is one of the most important forms of communication. The words people write, and the
way they write them can change the world. For instance when the founding fathers wrote the
Declaration of Independence they broke away from what was, at the time, one of the most
powerful nations in the world. From that piece of writing our great country was created. If you
think about all the wars that have been fought throughout history most of them were ended by
writing up a treaty or an agreement of some kind. World War One was the most devastating and
brutal wars the world had ever seen up to that point, it was with the Treaty of Versailles that the
war ended . Writing also can also tell great stories, whether they are true or not. Everything that
we know about history came from written accounts.

When you are writing it is important that you think about the audience. If you are writing a piece
of literature for elementary school kids you would not include long and complicated words.
Likewise if you were writing a research paper for your masters degree you would not use any
slang words, you would be very formal. This semester I thought about my audience when
working on our instruction sets. I had to think about the audience when describing how to build a
safe fire because it was designed to be for the general population, and not everyone is an
expert on fire building so i had to break down and simplify my instructions.

Our finial project for this course was to put on a zombie info expo, this project was based on our
white paper project. For the expo I had to revise the white paper by taking out some parts,
adding information, and rearranging others. This process of editing helped make the information
easier for my audience to understand. But not all of the editing I did this semester was that
major, most of the editing was simple things like proofreading. Small edits made to fix spelling or
grammatical errors makes your writing better. Much like a black smith removes impurities in
metal to make it stronger, when errors are removed in writing it makes you writing’s message
more powerful and credible. Before I submitted any materials for projects I would re-read it to
catch any mistakes.

I will use the skills I have learned in this class a lot in my future career. I want to become a
robotics engineer so i will need to be able to write instruction sets specifying how a robot must
be built or programmed. I may also have to write white reports on the latest tech that the robots
may have in them. The skills I have acquired in this class makes me much more prepared for
that, and future writing courses.

They assignment I have chosen to put on my E-Portfolio shows my strengths because in writing
my instruction set for the group project I had to make sure they were detailed enough. That
particular project was challenging because I had to do some trial and error with the wording, that
trial and error made me a much stronger writer.
