The MST (Mentor School Teacher) will use this form to formally observe the trainee’s performance and to give feedback based on the
selected teaching competencies.

Comments:
- Professionalism is of high standard, as always.

Planning for Learning


Comments:
- The lesson plan was sent the night before the lesson.

- Keep in mind – especially when you are being observed – that a ‘catchy’ (interesting, creative,
original) starter can help get the students’ attention and create greater interest in the lesson from the
very start. Part of preparing a good lesson – especially a lesson that will be observed – is showing that
you have given your lesson a lot of thought and that you have done your very best (and not just
settled for ordinary tasks and strategies).

- Owsha explained why the first worksheet/activity was not differentiated: her rationale is well
justified. Nevertheless, some students finished very, very quickly while others struggled (did only a
few exercices). Keep in mind that there are different ways of differentiating. For example, struggling
students can be allowed to use the mini whiteboard to complete the same worksheet as the others.

- Overall, the planning consisted of a teaching demonstration (as a starter) and three worksheets. This
was just fine; however, please keep in mind that when you are being observed, you should aim to
vary your resources and activities as much as possible ….

- 2nd worksheet is differentiated: good 😊

- The plenary was a great activity (fun, active) and it generated much enthusiasm on behalf of the
students (everyone wanted to participate!). Just be careful how you organize this type of activity (the
space, in particular): it is physically difficult for BOTH students to access the plastic numbers available
on the whiteboard. Next time, place the plastic numbers BETWEEN the students from the very start.
Excellent game nonetheless: it simply required more thorough planning in terms of the use of
materials (use of plastic numbers).

Managing Learning
Comments:
- All students are very involved in the work and are engaged at all times!
- Students are very well behaved and classroom management is completely under control 😊

- Owsha is focused on time management during the entire lesson. She frequently reminds students
about the time that remains to complete a task.
- Even during the plenary – which consists of a game! – students are very well behaved!!
- Students are SO EAGER to participate in the game (plenary activity)!

Implementing Learning
Comment:
- Owsha announces the learning outcome at the start of the lesson. Good.
- Be careful when writing on the whiteboard, not to block the students who are seeing only your back!
- Owsha completes three examples (Math operations) together with students; then she asks students
to work out some additional examples on their own (all students are trying hard to solve these
exercises)
- After an answer has been given, why not ask “who got it right?” or “who has a different answer”? Or
ask the students to give the answers instead of announcing them all yourself. Am simply giving you
ideas for increasing student participation; this is also a strategy for frequently checking students’
understanding.
- Instructions are given and one exercise is modelled on the whiteboard. Good.
- Overall, the beginning of the lesson is fine …. But try to solicit greater student participation: make
them speak a bit (good for language development) and express their thinking/reasoning.

Assessment
Comments:
- At the end of this lesson, Owsha appear to have a general understand and pulse on students’ level of
attainment. She said she would review students’ work, give them feedback and plan next steps for
teaching and learning accordingly.

Reflection on Practice
Comments:
- Owsha is very capable of reflecting on her strength and areas for development.
- She is very open to constructive feedback.

Action Plan:
1- Focus on developing more creative lesson plans (especially for observations)

2- Please focus on improving spoken language - grammar in particular. Examples of erroneous sentences
heard during this lesson:
-“Today we’re going to talk about additioning two-digit numbers” (say instead “Today, we will be
adding two-digit numbers”).
- “I will give you this worksheet paper” (say instead “I will give you this worksheet” or “I will give
you this paper”)
