The evolution and set-up of CII

The establishment of Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) is basically a journey of


transformation from a minuscule association, representing a small segment of industry, to the
premier business association of modern India.

CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization,


playing a proactive role in India's development process. Founded in 1895, India's premier
business association has more than 9100 members, from the private as well as public sectors,
including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 300,000 enterprises from
291 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.

From their formation, they have constantly expanded their horizon to concentrating on
various sectors such as Affirmative Action, CSR & Community development, Disaster
Management, Education, Environment, Industry - NGO Partnerships, Public Health, Rural
development, Skills development, Empowerment of persons with disabilities and Sports.
In the process of their growth and endowment, they have also been focusing on the services in
the food sector, taken up road safety initiatives and various other causes.

In 2001, CII Institute of Quality was inaugurated. The first quality summit was organized in
1993. Post that, CII recommended the setting up of Quality Council of India(QCI) to provide
a mechanism for national accreditation. The Foundation Stone of CII was laid in 1996 for
structuring CII Institute of Quality and CII initiated the setup of Institute of Quality in
Bangalore in 1999.

CII Institute of Quality (CII IQ) is the leading authority in Quality Enhancement among
organizations and industries. Over the past century, CII has provided Indian Industries with
the support, systems and tools to make a mark in the competitive world. It is realized that the

From starting as the Total Quality Management Division (TQMD) of CII in the mid-eighties,

workplaces and making the world at large, a better place by applying quality tools, techniques
and systems. CII IQ provides the best of its kind training and consulting services to
organizations to help improve their performance and set a standard of excellence.

CII IQ has tie-ups with several international organisations to bring their best practices to India.
It has helped several ventures in improving their Total Quality Management Systems besides
helping them win recognition such as the Deming Prize and the Japan Quality Medal.

In 1994, CII introduced the CII-EXIM bank Award in India.The first CII-EXIM Bank Award
for Business Excellence was won by Hewlett Packard, India in 1997. The award recognizes
India’s best performing organizations and industry leaders with an indisputable track record
of success in turning strategy into action and continuously improving the performance of their
organization. Presently, this year, CII will announce for the first time, CII Award for
Healthcare Excellence 2019 and the award ceremony is an integral part of the Quality Summit
schedule.

The CII Quality Summit is India’s largest event dedicated to Quality with comprehensive
technical content, high level networking with global speakers and an opportunity that CII
provides to engage with the industry’s leading solution providers.

There has been a perpetual rise in the growth rate of CII from its foundation in 1988. In the
progressive years, evolution has encompassed on an international level. With 68 offices,
including 9 Centres of Excellence in India, and 11 overseas offices in Australia, China, Egypt,
France, Germany, Indonesia, Singapore, South Africa, UAE, UK, and the USA, as well as
institutional partnerships with 394 counterpart organizations in 133 countries, CII serves as a
reference point for Indian industry and the international business community.
