A Semi – Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 10

I. Objectives:
At the end of the discussion, at least 75% of the learners should be able to:
 describe what is the end behavior of the graph of polynomial functions;
 identify the end behavior of the graph of a polynomial function; and
 graph polynomial functions based on its observed behavior.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Polynomial Function
Subtopic: End Behavior of Polynomial Function
Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Module Grade 10, by Melvin M. Callanta,
Rex Book Store Inc., pp. 112-116.
Materials: Chalk and Blackboard, Visual Aids.
Strategy: Mini Lessons, Simulated Activity

III. Procedure:
A. Daily Routinary Activities:
1. Opening Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Classroom Management
5. Closing Prayer
B. Review (Mini Lessons)
The teacher will ask the students what they have learned on the
previous topic. He will provide short discussion based on what part of the
previous lesson that the students are still having difficulty with.
C. Motivation (Simulated Activity)
The teacher will introduce the song “I’m an Egyptian”. First, the
teacher will show the students how to sing the given song and including its
dance steps then the students will follow it afterwards.

“ I’m an Egyptian ”
Rising to the Right, Falling to the Left
Falling to the Right, Rising to the Left
I’m an Egyptian
Falling to the Right, Falling to the Left

D. Lesson Proper:
Guide Questions.
1. Do you know how to identify the behavior or the flow of the graph of
a given polynomial function?
2. Is there hint or something on a polynomial function that will help us
identify its graph?

Consider these following examples.

Case 1 Case 2
f(x) = x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 3 f(x) = -x3 - 6x2 - 3x + 10
The end of the graph The end of the graph
rises to the right and falls rises to the left and falls
to the left. to the right.

Case 3 Case 4
f(x) = x2 + 4x + 3 f(x) = -x4 + 16x2
Both the right and left of Both the right and left of
the graph rises upward. the graph falls downward.

On Case 1, the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is positive (+),
then the left end of the graph moves downward and right end moves upward.
On Case 2, the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is negative (-),
then the left end of the graph moves upward and right end moves downward.
On Case 3, the degree is even and the leading coefficient is positive (+),
both ends of the graph moves upward.
On Case 4, the degree is even and the leading coefficient is negative (-),
both ends of the graph moves downward.

Multiplicity is the number of times of a factor is repeated.

f(x) = (x - 3)(x - 1)3
When the multiplicity of a factor is odd, the
graph of the polynomial function passes to the
root and we call this manner of the graph
“shoot”.

When the multiplicity of a factor is even, the f(x) = (x - 3)2(x + 2) 2

graph of the polynomial function bounces to

the root and we call this manner of the graph
“bounce”.

E. Application:
Identify the behavior of the graph of the given polynomial functions by
describing the direction of both of its ends.
1. f(x) = 2x3 + 6x2 – 4x + 5
2. f(x) = -3x4 + 8x2 – 4
3. f(x) = 5x2 – 2x +21
4. f(x) = 4x3 – 32x2 + 16x
5. f(x) = -16x3 + 36x1
F. Generalization:
Ask the students what are the most important things to be considered
when identifying the end behavior of the graph of a polynomial function.
IV. Evaluation:
Graph the following polynomial function based on its observed behavior.
6. f(x) = - 3x3 + 15x2 – 4x + 24
7. f(x) = x2 – 6x + 12
8. f(x) = 7x3 – 14x2 + 21x
9. f(x) = - 4x4 – 9x2
10. f(x) = 15x3 – 25x2 – 19x + 16

V. Agreement:
A. Follow UP
Identify which case does the each of polynomial functions belong then
graph them based on its observed behavior.
1. f(x) = 2x3 – 7x + 12
2. f(x) = - 18x4 + 12x2 – 8
3. f(x) = + 4x3 + 10x2 – 15
4. f(x) = - 2x3 + 13x2 + 9
5. f(x) = 4x2 – 4
