ABSTRACT

Manufacturing is the process of making articles on a large-scale using machinery. The

most common and frequently used machining operation in batch production is drilling. In
order to drill component in mass production we need mass production tools. Jigs and
fixture are one of the most commonly used mass production tools which can accurately
manufacture duplicate and interchangeable parts.

Jig is a work holding device which holds, support and locate the workpiece and guide the
cutting tool to the correct position to carry out any operation. A fixture is also a device
which holds and locate a workpiece during a manufacturing operation but unlike jig it
doesn’t guide the tool. Jigs and fixture greatly improve productivity and reduce
manufacturing cost as less skilled operator can also carry out drilling operation with high
precision and accuracy.

Designing procedure of jigs requires appropriate selection of locater, clamps, tool guiding
device and other jigs element. Our Aim is to create a library of these elements using
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software which will reduce the labour for designing these
elements again for different types of jigs and avoid repetitive design of these components.
Using this library, we will also create some standard jigs and make appropriate changes
according to workpiece.
