I. Write a brief discussion and observation about the three experiments in transmission
line measurements

The first three experiments are entitled Transmission Line Characteristic Impedance
Measurements, Determining the Transmission Response of Two-wire Line, and Taking
Measures to Reduce Attenuation on Long Transmission Lines, respectively. The goal of the
experiments is to observe and determine the parameters and its behavior by using Transmission
Line Models and graphs.

The first experiment focused on determining the characteristic impedance for short and
long Transmission Line Models. The characteristic impedance is calculated using the open and
short- circuit termination’s impedances. The parameters measured were the voltages; input
voltage and resistors voltage. These voltages were used to compute for the current which is
needed for the calculations of the impedances. It is open circuited when a bridging plug is
connected, it is short circuited when a bridging plug is not connected. During open-circuit
termination, the input voltage varies inversely with the frequency and the 300-ohm resistor’s
voltage varies directly with the frequency. While during short-circuit termination, the input
voltage and the 300-ohm resistor’s voltage varies directly with the frequency.

The second experiment focused on determining the transmission response for short and
long transmission line models. The transmission line’s response was observed by calculating for
the Attenuation. Instead of using a bridging plug for the short-circuit termination, a 600-ohm
resistor is used. Both of the voltage, V1 and V2, varies inversely with the frequency. The
attenuation is the ratio of the voltages; this attenuation is also converted in decibels. The
optimum value for the attenuation is 1 so that it will give 0 losses in decibels.

The third experiment focused on determining the transmission response of long line with
or without loading coils. This experiment is similar with the previous experiment; the only
difference is it includes a load. The load, which is the series inductance, is connected to reduce
the attenuation. Though, the wires exhibit considerable series inductance whose reactance is
significant at high frequencies only.
