1 Classwork / Assignment: Electrical Power.

1) An electric iron is labelled ‘240 V, 1 kW’. Under normal working conditions, find
a) the resistance, R, of the heating element in the iron;
b) the current, I, that will flow through the element;
c) the amount of thermal energy, E, that will be produced in 5 minutes.
2) Calculate the current, I, drawn by a 800 W vacuum cleaner when it is connected to a
240 V power supply. Suggest a suitable rating for the fuse to be used to prevent this
vacuum cleaner from overheating.
3) An electrical iron is rated 240V, 2000 W.
a) What is the resistance of its heating element?
b) Calculate the current when a 240 V supply is connected to the electrical iron.
4) A current of 12 A flows through a light bulb when it is connected to a 240 V supply.
Calculate the amount of energy dissipated after 5 minutes.
5) A 48 Ω resistor was connected to a 240 V power supply. Calculate the amount of
energy dissipated in the resistor after 2 minutes.
6) When a bulb is connected to a power supply of 12 V for 3 minutes, 1080 J of energy
is dissipated. Calculate:
a) the resistance of the bulb;
b) the amount of energy dissipated when the same bulb is connected to a power
supply of 20 V for 5 minutes.
7) A water heater is rated 240 V, 1500 W. Calculate the resistance of the heating
element and the current when the water heater is connected to a 240 V power
supply.
