Work, Energy & Power 2016

Enabling Objectives

 Describe power
- Define power
- Investigate human power
- Solve problems relating of power
 Explain efficiency
- Define efficiency
- Solve problems on efficiency

 Power is the rate of doing work.

 Unit of power is watt (W) = J/s

Power
Example:
 A boy of mass 40 kg takes 15s to run up a flight of stairs of height
10 m. What is his average power? (g = 10m/s 2)

 Efficiency of a system is known as the ratio of the useful energy

output to the total energy input.
 It is expressed as a percentage.

Example:
An electric motor is used to raise a weight of 100 N through a vertical
distance of 2.0 m. The total energy supplied to the motor is 500 J. Calculate
a) The useful energy output
Efficiency

b) The efficiency of the motor
