SPEX Offshore offers MCR Oil Tools’
RCT™ Radial Cutting Torch (RCT) tool for
severing all common sizes of tubing,
casing and drill pipe. The RCT tool is a
patented cutting device that does not
utilise explosive components or
dangerous chemicals that may pose
handling issues. The RCT can be
deployed within hours and
significantly reduce non-production
time.

RCT technology is one of the most efficient tubular

cutting systems currently available. Ranging in sizes
from 3/4” to 7” OD, the RCT cuts both normal and
exotic steels and operates in pressures up to
25,000psi (173 MPa) and temperatures as high as
500 °F (260 °C) in any orientation: compression,
tension, neutral or in torque.

The typical RCT toolstring consists of the Torch

(which includes the cutting nozzle, torch
extensions, Pressure Balance Anchor, and Thermal
Generator™). Additionally, centralisers are
positioned at the top and bottom of the toolstring
to ensure the tool is fully concentric within the
tubing, ensuring a precise cut every time.

MCR Oil Tools’ Radial Cutting Torch

The RCT can be run on electric line, slickline (with
MCR’s Remote Firing Mechanism (RFM) or other
downhole power unit / triggers) and on coil or pipe
with a pressure firing system.

Principles of Operation
When the RCT is run in hole to the desired depth, a
firing voltage is applied to the Thermal Generator™
causing the main fuel load to be activated. The
resulting exothermic reaction produces molten
plasma. Within 25 milliseconds, a stream of
ceramic integrated plasma exits the tool through
the nozzle, severing the target tubular. By design,
the advanced technology of the RCT tool erodes
the target material instead of displacing it; cuts are
non-flared and fracture-free with minimal to zero
backside damage, leaving a clean profile for
subsequent operations. Once the cut is made, the
RCT tool assembly is easily removed from the
wellbore.
