Why Aussie students are

flocking to Indonesia
Australian university students studying abroad are choosing Indonesia over
40 other Asian countries, under a government initiative.
Young people are lapping up the chance to learn the local language, embrace the
culture, and in typical student fashion make the most of the cheap cuisine.
The Australian Government's New Colombo Plan (NCP) offers undergraduates
scholarships and grants to live and study in the Indo Pacific region, with the goal of
lifting knowledge of our nearest neighbours.
Since 2014 when the NCP began, 7,619 Aussie students have chosen Indonesia
as their study destination, followed closely behind by China which has hosted
7,075 students from down under, and India with 5,492 students.
For Canberra's Cam Allan it was an obvious next step after taking Indonesian
language lessons in Canberra. "It's the biggest Muslim country in the world, one of
the biggest democracies, one of the most diverse in terms of language and
culture," Cam said.
"It's almost like the gap year I never had except a little more gruelling."
While Sydney's Nikki Singh wanted to learn about other cultures for her psychology

in the world we really need more mental health professionals to be able to deal

Supercars champ lashes out at 'toxic' rivals
Supercars champion Scott
McLaughlin will save his
celebrations until he's away
from a paddock he's labelled
"toxic".
McLaughlin's garage was almost
funereal after Sunday's Sandown
500, despite the DJR Team Penske
star's ninth-placed finish securing
back-to-back titles.
The excitement of his achievement
had been dampened by a pre-race
penalty imposed on him and his team
for an engine regulations breach at
last month's Bathurst 1000.
McLaughlin and co-driver Alex
Premat were sent to the back of the
grid for the breach which also resulted
in the New Zealander's pole position
and lap record at Mount Panorama
being wiped.
DJR Team Penske were also fined
$30,000 for the breach.
The pair kept their win in the 1000km
endurance race, however, after the
engine was changed following the
shootout.
It's the second time DJR have been
fined since a controversial Bathurst,
with a record $250,000 fine and the
loss of 300 team points handed down

Whincup, who combined with
Craig Lowndes to execute one
of the most clinical endurance
campaigns in history following
their Sandown 500 win.
Across the three events at Bathurst,
Surfers Paradise and Sandown, the
#888 duo finished no lower than fourth
in all races, including the two
Sandown sprints.
From a maximum of 950 points across
the three events, Whincup and
Lowndes tallied 878, which marks the
highest ever total recorded by a
combination in Enduro Cup history.
Lowndes claimed a record third
Enduro Cup win, with Whincup
winning his second. If
not for a late gamble
on a pit stop at
Bathurst, and orders
from the team to stick
behind the sister car
on the Sunday at
Surfers Paradise, the
perfect score would
have been theirs.

enduro season a
whopping 868 points down on
eventual series champion Scott

list – but after his and Lowndes'
enduro dominance, the early-season
frustrations are dead and
buried.“Obviously the championship
got away from us halfway through the
year, and Bathurst got away from us
as well,” Whincup said.
“It's nice to have a major trophy in the
cabinet coming to the end of the year
… the start of the year was lean from
our standards.
“ We ' r e u s e d t o h a v i n g g o o d
performances, so from the start of the
year, not being able to crack a win, or a
pole, or anything for so long, it was
very tough.
“We worked on the things in our

control, and of course the category did
a great job to even the cars up to give
us a fighting chance. In the enduro
campaign, I feel like we made the
most of our opportunities.”
Coming into the enduros, the
pressure was on Lowndes to justify
the 'dream team' tag after linking up
with Whincup for the first time in a
decade.
Lowndes was sloppy at times at
Bathurst, with a pair of mid-race errors
handing the lead to eventual winner
Alex Premat.
From there, the 45-year-old cleaned
up his act and returned to his
imperious best across the Gold Coast
and Sandown events. No driver
launched away off starts better than
Lowndes, with his stints in the
Saturday Surfers race and the
Sandown enduro up there with the
drives of the season.
Had Lowndes beaten Garth Tander to
the first chicane on Sunday on the
Gold Coast, the #888 may well have
won five races in a row.
Team boss Roland Dane had no
qualms in trying to recreate the
revered Whincup/Lowndes dynamic
which brought home three straight
Bathurst wins and a Sandown win
over 10 years ago.
Lowndes was satisfied to repay his
boss's faith, but paid tribute to the
team for putting all their chips of the
table in the year's biggest races, with
the drivers' championship a foregone
conclusion.
It could have been much closer, had
Shane van Gisbergen not suffered a
heartbreaking suspension failure
while leading late at Sandown – but a
one-two in the Enduro Cup standings
proved to Lowndes that Triple Eight

remain the benchmark in the long
distance events, with the team
winning five of seven Enduro Cups
since it was introduced in 2013.
“When the PIRTEK Enduro Cup was
introduced, I think it gave every team
something to strive for,” Lowndes
explained.
“If you're not going to win the
championship, it gives you another
spectrum of racing to be able to hang
your head high, in that at least three of
the races you've done the right job.
“There's no secret that Roland came
here to win Bathurst. Jamie and I have
different opinions, he loves to win the
championship, I love Bathurst, but
hopefully between us we can keep
winning the Enduro Cup.
“It's about the consistency over the
three races. All three
tracks are massively
different, so you could
be good at Bathurst
and bad at Gold
Coast, and vice
versa.
“It highlights team
preparation and how
they go about it. We
would have been
separated by one
point, so everyone in
the Red Bull Holden
Racing Team must be
very proud.
“To be racing one-two
with 11 laps to go, one
point apart, is pretty special for the
team.”

on, Matthew Wade's a Test lock
Test careers will go on the
line on Monday when a high-
stakes, final audition for a
spot in Australia's XI this
month begins.
Australia A has been stacked for
the tour match against Pakistan,
with Usman Khawaja, Travis
Head, Joe Burns and Marcus
Harris among those asked to
impress selectors ahead of the
first Test on November 21.
But it's who won't be in Perth for
the batting showdown that reveals
just as much about Australia's Test
squad, expected to be named this
week.
Shaun Marsh
won't be playing
for Australia A —
perhaps a sign
the Test door has
finally closed
behind him —
while Matthew
Renshaw and
P e t e r
Handscomb
have also been
overlooked.
So has Matthew
Wade, but for
entirely different
reasons that are
no doubt welcome relief to the 31-
year-old, who clawed his way back
into a baggy green this year.
Wade now sits in a group with
Steve Smith and Pat Cummins.
Selectors have seen all they need
to see of him. He's a Test lock.
That's a remarkable development
when you consider he was spat
out of the national set-up just two
years ago and — after failing to
make the most of his 22 Test
appearances — was given little
chance of cutting the mustard
again. It's therefore been a drastic
turnaround, something which
Wade says has finally dawned on
him.
“Since I got home (from the
Ashes) I've had a chance to reflect
on how big the winter was for me

and I suppose the amount of work I

“When you're in the moment and
leading into a game you don't think
much about that.
“I'm just loving every opportunity I
get ... Every time I walk out onto

than what I probably used to. I was
so tunnel-visioned to try and

and the game itself.
“Now I get the opportunity,
especially while not keeping, to
actually take it all in and enjoy it.”
He added: “The summer certainly
doesn't feel as long when you're
actually enjoying it a lot more than
what I was back then.”
After spending five years in-and-
out of Australia's side without ever
mounting an iron-clad case to be
its wicketkeeper-batsman, Wade
was turned away from the 2017-18
Ashes series for Tim Paine.
Paine impressed that summer by
making 192 runs at 48.00 to
solidify his position. Just months
later, he was named Australia's
Test captain in the wake of the

scandal, leaving Wade all but
frozen out.
Wade kept fighting in the Sheffield
Shield though, that season scoring
654 runs at 43.60 — nothing to

scoff at, but not enough to make
selectors regret their decision,
even if he had three centuries to
boot. He was miles away from a
Test recall.
Paine was swiftly becoming
Australia's darling and leading a
new, clean image which some
considered to be at odds with
Wade's notoriously incessant
sledging. Furthermore, Paine's
glovework was touted by many as
the best in Australia.
And then the list of reasons for
Wade's exclusion grew further.
After finding career-best form last
summer, Wade was told by
selectors he
needed to make
runs as a batting
specialist and

was therefore
knocked back
from playing

in the Shield at

Wade was willing to jump through
that hoop, ditching the gloves for

runs at 60.05. He also scored 592
runs at 42.28 in the Big Bash
League.
Having done all that was asked of
him, and more, Wade's case for a

measure, he also dominated
Australia A's tour of England (355
runs at 88.75 across both formats)

eggs and raise their young.
“So we estimate about 5 tonnes (4.5
metric tonnes) of plastic being
brought to Midway every year just by
adult albatross feeding it to their
chicks,” Ms Goodale said.
The albatross tend to seek out squid
eggs that attach themselves to
floating pieces of plastic, which is
why so many birds are eating the
material, she continued.
And it's not just the seabirds that are
harmed by ocean plastic.

and green sea turtles can die while
entangled in plastic nets.

microplastic.

Hawaiian Islands are accumulating
debris at a faster rate than scientists
previously thought.
Papahanaumokuakea, which
quadrupled in size under President
Barack Obama in 2016, is the
world's largest marine conservation
area and was inscribed in 2010 as a
UNESCO mixed World Heritage
site.
“Papahanaumokuakea is both a
biologically rich and culturally
sacred place,” Ms Clark said.
“The Hawaiians call it a place of
abundance, or aina momona.”
But circulating currents now
bring an abundance of plastic
and other trash from all around
the Pacific Rim to Hawaii's
beaches.
The debris ranges from tiny
microplastics that nearly every
animal in this marine
ecosystem ingests to huge
fishing nets that gather plants,
animals and other debris while
bulldozing across fragile coral
reefs.
“The estimates are that there's
about 57,000 pounds of marine
debris that washes ashore
within this part of the
archipelago annually,” Ms Clark
said.
