Math 3 Course Outline

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the school year, the students should be able to:

1. solve problems involving basic plane, coordinate, and transformational geometry, right triangle trigonometry,
sequences, and series;
2. analyze graphs and properties of functions using ICT tools and manipulative devices;
3. model real-life data using functions; and
4. gain a deeper appreciation of mathematics and its applications.

FIRST QUARTER

1. Basic Plane, Coordinate, and Transformational Geometry. Basic Geometric Terms and Notations, Points on a Line
and on a Plane, Distance and Midpoint Formulas
2. Transformational Geometry. Review of Functions, Transformations on the Coordinate Plane (Translations,
Reflections, Glide Reflections, Rotations, and Scale Transformations (Dilations)
3. Right Triangle Trigonometry. Similar Right Triangles, Trigonometric Ratios, Solutions of Right Triangles,
Applications of Right Triangles (Angles of Elevation and Depression)

SECOND QUARTER

4. Analysis of Graphs: Polynomial and Rational Functions. Polynomial and Rational Functions, Finding and
Estimating Intercepts, Constant, Increasing, and Decreasing Functions, Asymptotes, Graphs of Polynomial and
Rational Functions, and Graphical Interpretations of Operations on Functions
5. Other Types Of Functions. Square Root Function, Piecewise-defined Function, Floor Function, Ceiling Function,
Signum Function; and Transformations of Functions
6. Inverse Functions. Review of Composition of Functions, Functions that Have Inverses, Graphs of Inverse Functions

THIRD QUARTER

7. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. Graphs and Properties of Exponential and Logarithmic Functions,
Common Logarithmic Function, and Natural Exponential and Logarithmic Functions; Laws of Logarithms and Change-
of-Base Formula; Solving Exponential; and Logarithmic Equations; Applications of Exponential and Logarithmic
Functions (Compound Interest, Exponential Growth, Exponential/Radioactive Decay, Continuously Compounded
Interest, Richter Scale)

FOURTH QUARTER

8. Functions as Mathematical Models. Building Functions to Model Relationships Between Two Quantities, and Using
Functions to Model Relationships of Real Life Data
9. Sequences and Series. Sequences (Definition of a Sequence, Arithmetic Sequence, Geometric Sequence, and Other
Types of Sequences), Series (Arithmetic Series, Geometric Series, and Applications)
10. Pascal’s Triangle. Patterns in the Pascal’s Triangle, Binomial Expansion
