SUGAR INDUSTRY – NOTES

Q. Why sugar industry is ideally suited to the cooperative sector?

Answer: -

1] it is a crop which grows only once in a year and hence most part of the year the farmers
remain unemployed. The cooperatives thus help in providing additional skills and jobs to the
people.

2] It is easier for the farmers to sell their sugarcane and sugar through the cooperatives as they
face many problems selling the produce themselves not only due to illiteracy but also lack of
awareness about the working of the market and the government policies.

3] Cooperatives help the farmers by providing inputs at low cost for growing sugarcane and also
managing the irrigational facilities for the farmers as sugarcane required ample and timely
supply of water for its proper growth.

4] They also help the landless farmers / labourers by pooling up the resources and providing
employment to the landless labourers.

5] They also establish schools, health centres for medical facilities and organise various cultural
and sports activities and set aside a considerable amount of money to make the lives of local
inhabitants comfortable.

6] They recognise the importance of research and development for the benefit of the sugar
industry to solve agricultural and technical problems of the sugar industry and also increase the
use of the by products of the industry thereby reducing wastage and pollution.
